What is wrong with :"Brazil began to open itself to other nations"?
I have same question.
Nothing except Duolingos lacking support for all possible solutions... :-)
YuMoises: Another alternate which should be accepted: "Brazil began to open itself UP to other nations".
English does not require “up”.
“...began to open to other nations” should be accepted as a correct answer.
why the "A SE"
why not just "O Brasil começou a abrir para outras nacoes
or even O Brasil começcou abrir para outras nacoes
From what I understand:
"começou a" = "began to"
"se abrir" = "open (itself)"
The se is a reflexive pronoun to specify what is being opened. In this case, se refers to Brazil. :)
Agree. Needs updating.
Can you not write: started to open since that has the same sense as began to open?
