I still get confused with antauxe being used to mean forward in space and backward in time, does anyone have a way to remember when to use which?

Both usages refer to being in front. This sentence says that before now the region had certain traditions. Antaŭ is also used to refer to something in front. Both are seen as nuances of the same idea. So antaŭ sep jaroj = seven years ago (seven years before) antaŭ la domo = in front of the house (before the house).

Actually very simple, but easily confused if one is expecting a language to be difficult.
