Weekly Incubator Update: Tracking Progress from August 9th to August 16th

Well, my fellow incubator contributors have kept me quite busy today. :) There are as many as 10 updates included in this edition of WIU! Here we go...

Congratulations to the this week's joint Leaders Extraordinaire - Team German-for-French and Team Catalan-for-Spanish!

The progress spread is remarkably skewed this week with these two teams doing the heavy lifting in taking the incubator average progress beyond the critical 1.00% threshold. The skew is also depicted by the median's drop to 0%

Entering beta
We have 5 teams in the 90s. Hatching of courses is imminent.

Exiting beta
Two courses have just graduated from beta during the last week. Congratulations to team Norwegian and team Arabic for your hard work in achieving this awesome feat! Congratulations are also in order for the team Duolingo for their support, especially so to the Arabic team with their right-to-left writing system. Last but not the least, to the learning community who have helped these teams achieve success by sending their sentence reports and suggestions to help refine the course content.

As a side note, I would also like to remind the graduating teams to please notify me when they post any update in future. Each week, I look for updates only for Phase 1 and Phase 2 courses.

Thought for the week

BREAKING NEWS: A Green Owl flies In The Arabs’ Skies

At last, our course reaches the final phase… Graduation! In the past few weeks we launched the course on Android & iPhone and we noticed an astonishing increase in the number of users while maintaining a stable report curve. Our course is finally mature enough for graduation. After a long journey, our green owl unlocks phase 3 marking “English for Arabic Speakers” as the first Arabic course on Duolingo! It wouldn’t have been possible without you, your reports and your topics in the forums stirred the team’s agenda, so thank you!

Next, the team will keep adding new exercises and lessons to enrich the course, all while planning for the long-awaited “Arabic for English Speakers” course, so stay tuned ;)

Ukrainian course. UPDATE.

Every summer has a story.. We hope your summer is bringing you only the nicest moments and the greatest stories to remember. One of the things you surely can be proud of is your personal Duolingo journey. We are glad to see people conquering language trees, keeping on streaks, getting well-deserved XPs and lingots. Indeed, Duolingo is creating a story of your language victories!

Ukrainian course numbers nearly 60k learners for now. Beta is going on and there's a lot to do. Couple of months there was not much Incubator activity from the team but we ARE coming back. We are resuming to process your reports, fix errors and facilitate your learning. And we want to thank those who keep helping our students on to successful learning - ДЯКУЄМО!

An important task for us to do by the end of this month is completing the audio. We've already received the list of the sentences that are "voiceless" and scheduled the recordings.

A new team member (native English speaker who speaks excellent Ukrainian) was invited to help make the English translations of sentences more.. English and less Ukrainian :)))

We do see things that need to be fixed/changed/improved thanks to your feedback. But your positive comments and grateful remarks are also nice to see, thank you for those!

Enjoy the rest of your summer with Duolingo!

Week 6

We are now at 252 words, or 7 percent done. (Continuing on the assumption that there will be 3,700 words in the end.) This week we mostly worked on the accusative of the personal pronouns and started on the nominative and accusative of the possessive pronouns. By the feel of it, these pronouns are likely to offer the first encounter with the more frustrating Czech grammar features in the tree, if we leave them where they are in Skills 10 and 11.

To explain Duo's wildly optimistic estimates of the percent done and the expected date of completion: we started with an empty tree, so Duo's tracker does not know how many words will eventually be added, or what 100 percent means

Week 10: 18% complete, beta launch 10-Dec-2015

There is progress on the tree design, but no progress to report this week in terms of percentage.

TL;DR As many as 10 updates, two teams achieving 9% progress, and two teams (Arabic & Norwegian) exiting beta!

The next update is expected on Sunday, 23rd of August at 3:00 pm UTC.

Previous Update 02-Aug to 09-Aug

August 16, 2015

I love reading The Weekly Incubator Update. I really do :) Thanks for the hard work, guys.

August 16, 2015

An ode on the incubator. :)

Can't wait to Czech Czech. Although I also want to know what's beHind the Hindi course... Maybe I should rename my Cat, Alan would suit him better. Team Russian, don't start Rushing, just those last pesky skills (and other things) and you'll roam an iconic Beta phase! (Ignore the last one :) ) Team Polish, keep polishing every single part of your course! Team Hebrew! Hey! Brewing an awesome course, right? :) (I waste way to much Thaim on the Incubator, watching other courses...) Okay, I know what you're thinking. I'm a GrEEK.

P.S. I Hung a riant new poster in my room yesterday :-) I hope it keeps Cling'n on the wall!

August 16, 2015

Kenya believe it? I'm so excited that I'm Japan up and down.

August 16, 2015

There's Norway I'll believe you.

August 16, 2015

Let me Sweden the deal with a Canada yummy cranberry sauce. It's really good on Turkey.

August 16, 2015

I just cringed so much I turned inside out...

August 16, 2015

So... How does it feel like... to be turned inside out? ;)

August 16, 2015

I'm just here waiting hoping Russian won't take another month to get out in beta.

August 16, 2015

From what ShadyArc has said, it sounds like we need to kick someone on the Duolingo staff to get on programming the TTS.

August 17, 2015

Hopefully we're not on another three month no-addition period.

August 16, 2015

And hopefully one of the additions during these three months will be Finnish for English.

August 16, 2015

August 16, 2015

Hopefully another addition will be Serbo-Croatian for English.

August 16, 2015

Da, to bude odlično. :)

August 17, 2015

Arabic and Indonesian for English speakers should both be coming sooner rather than later.

August 16, 2015

It has usually taken a couple months for the reverse course to get added, so I wouldn't count on Arabic. Indonesian and Finnish on the other hand...

August 16, 2015

The incubator is not ready for Arabic yet.

August 16, 2015

What needs to change for the incubator to be ready for an Arabic course?

August 16, 2015

That is really to bad. I was hoping with all the language with different script being added (Hebrew, Hindi, etc.) that the right-to-left problem wouldn't be to huge anymore. sigh
Guess I will have to work with Memrise for a while longer.
Thanks for the heads up though, that it is a technical problem with the incubator.

August 16, 2015

I don't think it should be a problem, mostly because Hebrew is a different script language and also a right-to-left language, just like Arabic, so I don't see why it would be a big problem to add Arabic for English. I know that they wouldn't add it this early, because English for Arabic just graduated, but it wouldn't be too huge of a problem to add it.

August 16, 2015

UneJamKuqEZi, and what about Albanian? Have you ever thought about creating the course? :)

August 25, 2015

I have thought about creating it, but I sadly am not fluent in Albanian. I am fluent with speaking and listening, but not reading and writing. So, I don't see how I could help since most of the Duolingo lessons are reading and writing.

August 25, 2015

We got 2 courses relating to Portugese. Yay!

August 17, 2015

Team Hebrew made good progress and the Klingon course moved!

August 16, 2015

Hi... is there anyting going on with the Yiddish course? we haven't seen any progress in weeks :(

August 16, 2015

Everybody deserves a good vacation! :) They'll be back. I know they'll be back. ;)

August 16, 2015

I truly hope so :)

August 16, 2015

Czech is planning on 3,700 words?! That's fantastic! Are they just that much more enthusiastic about their tree or is there some serious expansion for existing trees in the works?

August 16, 2015

I'm not sure how the words are counted in Duo, but if all the cases of a word (all variants with different endings) are counted as separate words, then a big number will be necessary.

August 16, 2015

Interesting! I wasn't sure what you meant by word cases, so I looked it up and discovered why. The language that I am learning is analytic, meaning that it has a set word order. However, Czech is synthetic, meaning that the ending of the word determines its function. Because of that, there is no set word order. Do you know how many cases there are in Czech?

August 16, 2015

Seven. Not as much as in some other languages (like Finnish, for example), but still a lot to give learners a tough time.

August 16, 2015

Whew, sounds difficult! I am one happy panda that French is analytic, not systematic!

August 16, 2015

I used to think this was a scary thing, but I don't anymore, there are very regular and logical patterns you can use, and at the end of the day you are just conveying the same information you would in English or French, even if it might seem upside down compared to the way you are used to.

It sounds scarier than it really is, and to be honest, I think at least a small part of that is down to native speakers finding it hard to explain a concept that is deeply ingrained to new learners. Think of the last time you had to explain some peculiarity of English to anyone, it is nearly impossible without training...soit gets played up a bit, when it is not that hard, just different.

August 16, 2015

Can't be that much difficult if pre-school kids can manage it. ;)

August 16, 2015
<h1>GO TEAM HEBREW!!!!!!!!!! WOOOOOO!!!</h1>
August 16, 2015

No one's mentioning the crazy Catalan progress? CATALAN FOREVER!

August 16, 2015

We just wanted to say "we are back, baby"

August 17, 2015

August 17, 2015

Catalan has almost done it again at 8% this week!

August 21, 2015

There are still two days left... maybe they can do more!

August 21, 2015

They did another 4%... Speechless.

August 22, 2015

Uau! Molt bon treball, català!

August 16, 2015

Moltes gràcies!!!

August 17, 2015

You guys are also making a great progress!! well done

August 16, 2015

Thanks!!! This team of mine is awesome!!!

August 17, 2015

Nine percent in a week! We don't see such progress often lately.

August 16, 2015

Some very exciting news, but I'm disappointed the 1% progress we saw last week in the Hungarian course wasn't real.

I can't wait to start Ukrainian, though! :))))

August 16, 2015

I cannot express enough how ready I am for the Hungarian course.

August 18, 2015

I really wish that team Russian would post a short update on their incubator page telling us how the current progress on the ENG > RUS course is going. I'm really looking forward to the course, but the incubator's estimated release date is meaningless at this point.

August 17, 2015

Same, I tried Ukrainian while I wait but it isn't a great substitute and it feels like Russian has been up for ages without meaningful updates...!

August 17, 2015

I almost gave a little scream for joy when I saw German from French advance +9 to 95% after last week's -1! Hopefully this means a very soon release? Dare I hope?

August 16, 2015

When does everything think Russian will be out? Q_Q

August 16, 2015

Dunno. It might still be a while. A lot of courses sit at 100 until they get out of beta.

I'm using this time (however long it may be) to pass my daughter in French, hopefully :-).

August 16, 2015

One of the contributors said, three days ago, that it probably wouldn't be before September.

August 16, 2015

Two weeks is a short time, though.

August 18, 2015

Does anybody know what's going on with the English for Thai course? They haven't updated in literally a year, and the progress hasn't moved for a few months either.

August 16, 2015

I remember joining Duolingo on August 2014 and they were at 89%... At least they made some progress in one year

August 16, 2015

For some reason the only contributor won't add any others despite explicitly being suggested so.

August 16, 2015

Wow, what happened?

Also, lists four contributors. I hope they're all OK!

August 16, 2015

Dunno, some months ago there was only one active and when suggesting adding new contributers they replied my 'Yes we should', but none were added for weeks. Though now it seems there are three active on duo and who knows how many of them are working on the course.

August 16, 2015

Happy Graduation and Congratulations Team Arabic!

August 16, 2015

Sometimes I forget that a Czech course even exists.

August 16, 2015

¡Felicidades al equipo catalán!

August 17, 2015

August 17, 2015

Fantastic work by the German for French course volunteers! I'm looking forwards to the release.

August 16, 2015

Can't wait for Catalan to be complete!

August 17, 2015

Me too! It'll be doubly good because I'll have to do it from Spanish, so good review and lots of hard work. Can't wait to see the Catalonian flag. I wonder what monument or image they will use on their logo?

August 17, 2015

They already have a course page, and the main monument is the Arc de Trionf in Barcelona, a bit of a strange choice, since most people, the course contributors included, thought the Sagrada Familia was the obvious choice, but it has been relegated to the background.

August 17, 2015

Yes, we will get an answer from the design team soon (hopefully sooner than the works on the Sagrada Família are finished).

August 17, 2015

A beautiful building, had the pleasure of visiting while in Barcelona last year. I hope some day I can learn Catalan, it always looked very interesting and special. I also love the fact that it's a smaller European language - will be nice to see what is accomplished in Duolingo's future with regards to representing those sorts of languages!

August 17, 2015

The Sagrada Familia was one of the most beautiful sights I've ever seen in my life... I went earlier in the summer. Both the exterior and the interior were absolutely stunning. Gaudi was an amazing architect... I got to see the Park Guell too. I wish he could've made more...
