Duolingo is the most popular way to learn languages in the world. Best of all, it's 100% free!

Give us the API so I can code a mobile web-based version of Duolingo, which will work on all phones and not just iphone and Android. Let the community help you develop this project. Almost every respectable company has at least some sort of API. APIs are ways for the community to give back and market the product forward. Deaf ears or future plans...?

I'm going to go with "future plans" here, not "deaf ears"; there are a dozen suggestions every single day for what Duolingo should start working on, and it's unrealistic to expect a swift and personal response to all of them. I assume that the devs are a little busy with the incubator just now. It makes sense to prioritize this above the API because:

  1. The demand for new languages is far greater than the demand for an API, and
  2. (Speculation on my part) I suspect that rolling out all these new languages may involve some structural changes to the codebase, so if an API were released now it would probably be obsolete by next year.

Agreed, they sometimes agree with something that is written in the discussion, implement it subtly, and yet don't really mention it. For example, I recall making some comment about how the keyboard shortcuts for the immersion aren't visible and it is hard to navigate. Although there was no response from staff , few days later there was a small link in immersion explaining the the shortcuts. In their defense this makes perfect sense, they can't inform us of every small feature they add.

I just think they either underestimated the volume of suggestions, and didn't design the forum giving it much thought. Suggestions should have been well categorized somewhere within the site in a way that is easy to view. Anyway, when life gives you lemons...

On topic, I don't think the public API will be coming this year, perhaps next year or few years from now.

I think it's been acknowledged that the forum is inadequate for this kind of issue tracking -- I seem to recall reading recently that a revamp is on the way, but it may take a little while...

"On topic, I don't think the public API will be coming this year, perhaps next year or few years from now." That is extremely depressing to hear.
