Je cherche une explication pour "y" dans "Il cherche un refuge pour y passer la nuit"

Can someone please explain to me why "y" was used in that sentence?

Others can explain this better. However, y is a pronoun for there. From what I recall, it means "He is looking for a refuge to spend the night there."

I think 'y' can be explained as a pronoun substituting 'au refuge' as in 'Il cherche un refuge pour passer la nuit au refuge', to simplify things a bit, y is used to substitute 'au refuge'. Y is in fact a substitution for any noun requiring the preposition à before it too. E.g. Vous avez allé à la piscine? J'y ai allé as to replace à la piscine

Tip-vous êtes allé, je suis allé. :) Aller conjugates with être. Other than that, very good explanation! :) Bien fait!

Peut être ce lien peut aider: http://french.about.com/od/grammar/a/pron_adverbial.htm.

Le problème avec le mot "y" dans cet cas, c'est que dans la langue anglaise on peut l'omettre la plupart de temps. Par exemple dans la sentence "Il cherche un refuge pour passer la nuit; He looks for an refuge to spend the night (there)". Mais dans la langue française cet mot est obligatoire, tu ne peux pas écrire "Il cherche un refuge pour passer la nuit".

By the way, I personally had some problems with "en" as well, for the same reason that it is often optional in english.
