"America is not a country, it is a continent."
Translation:A América não é um país, é um continente.

When German cartographer Martin Waldseemüller coined the word "America" in 1507, he wrote it over South America. The rest of the continent wasn't explored and North America appeared on his map as "Terra Ulterior Incognita" (unknown land beyond). Spanish and Portuguese later renamed the whole continent "America". It's not the place of gringos -who arrived much later, to tell South Americans that the word "America" belongs to them. It sounds very arrogant.
