Duolingo has said they're going to make a Latin course at some point. Sorry for all the down votes you're getting. :( Have a few lingots. :)

It's not be "should" it must be a "MUST", It would be better if they prioritized making Latin for english speakers rather than spending time with the Klingon thing

It also depends on how many people can and are willing to contribute to a course.

Seeing people repeatedly dis Klingon is having the oddly counterintuitive effect of making me consider learning it. I guess I've always been a bit of a contrarian.

I wonder then, as someone who took Latin in high school, how the oral exercises would work, since we don't really know how Latin was pronounced (it's considered a "dead" language)? Would Latin as a course be useful? Yes, as many of our American English words have Latin roots, and many romance languages have Latin roots as well (Spanish and Italian just to name a couple). I'm just curious how they would do the oral exercises I guess......

Yes, the pronunciation would be an issue. Almost every university have their own rules on how to pronounce classical Latin. There is a lot of variation on how to pronounce ae, in particular.

yes, in Croatia we learned Latin with Croatian-latin pronunciation, so caesar was pronounced /tseh-zahr/, whereas we heard that the classical pronunciation would be /kaizar/

The thing is, most universities tend to use classical pronunciation, so it'd make more sense to use that. In any case, you could make two courses, since Duolingo's system allows two of them.

Eastern European countries teach by far the best pronunciation because it is based on the medieval and the actual living pronunciation of modern Latin by the Roman Catholic church.

I'm taking Latin in my upcoming 8th grade year, and I can say it does help when learning other languages. It has many roots you will recognize in multiple languages, so it's a wonderful base to language learning. Although it is not a spoken language today it can still come to use in many other languages that are spoken and will come to use as well.

I love Latin! I studied it in high school and it was such a rewarding experience. I learned a lot about my native language and I ended up regretting we don't speak it anymore. In a nutshell, I find it more logical and elegant than Italian.
However, I am not sure if Duolingo could work as a tool for learning Latin or other dead languages. I would love to be proved wrong though.
