What do we do if an article already has an English translation?

Do we just down vote it?

I have run into two articles out of 4 today that already have English translations, one in the article itself (every other line was an equivalent English translation), and the other article is either the same or so very nearly the same as a wikipedia article. For example: http://www.duolingo.com/translation/9badffb8bb49b3215abefb492c73d368 and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horse

What do we do when we come across this? Do we just down vote it?

In addition, if the original article submitted has a lot of spelling errors, is down voting how we deal with those as well?

My policy is just to down-vote. You shouldn't down-vote articles that you don't find interesting (because other people might), but I think it's useful to other users of the site to down-vote poor quality articles (poor in terms of low quality 'immersion' experience).

I use reporting only for articles that breach guidelines or breach copyright. (Not that I'm a fan of copyright but obviously duolingo needs to work within the law.) I think I've only ever reported one article.

Well, I've heard of reporting articles, but I'm not sure of what it does...

Reporting is for copyright, or offensive content (e.g. of a sexual nature, or discriminatory)

If you report an article for one of the two allowable categories: copyright and offensive content, the staff will review it and take action, if warranted. I once reported an "article" (it was not actually an article but a thread from a message board) for copyright violation. Within an hour it was gone.

Duolingo doesn't have a search function in immersion, so sometimes people may upload content they do not know exists. There is absolutely no way of knowing if the thing is already translated in some cases. Also even if it is, some people add articles just to get a feel of how to translate it themselves and practice.

Downvoting is for articles you dislike, so you may do that if you wish. Spelling mistakes are to be expected of online content, the goal is to translate the web, and there is a lot of nonsense out there.
