I am very curious to know what kinds of obstacles the Asian languages are encountering in the Incubator, as well as the various possible solutions being considered.

Any way to have a seat observing these discussions?

This sounds interesting. Being a student of Japanese, I know that a certain finesse is required for an online program to work and feel authentic.

I am curious too.

Chinese learners of Indo-European languages may have problems using the correct grammatical forms to convey numbers (no differentiation between singular and plural in Chinese), genders (which do not exist in Chinese), tenses and modes (both of which are reflected by context, not by verb conjugation).

Definite articles, e.g. "the" in English, also do not exist in Mandarin Chinese, and often have to be translated loosely into a demonstrative classifier, e.g. "这个" (this item) / "那个" (that item) -- though definite articles can be translated into Cantonese as uninitialized classifiers:

  • English: I finished reading the book.
  • Mandarin: 我读完这本书。 (Lit: I read finish this (book-classifier) book) or 我读完那本书。 (Lit: I read finish that (book-classifier) book)
  • Cantonese: 我睇完書。 (Lit: I look finish (book-classifier) book)

Perhaps the translation exercises will have to be graded quite loosely in the English-for-Chinese course.

Would this be the same situation for Japanese/Korean?

It would be great if Indian languages like Hindi were introduced sooner in duolingo

If they add Hindi, I will take it after Japanese and Russian. I have seen a lot of interest in it. I just realized I have a friend who speaks Hindi and English as first languages. I forgot about that! I will ask her :D
