I put "They sell books?" and that was marked wrong...? Is that because it could be mistaken for a statement?

I cant make out any sound or change of pitch to imply that it is a question, so I wrote "Eles vendem livros" without the question mark, DUO still gave it to me though.

Indeed, it doesn't sound like a question at all, people should report it.

As a native speaker, I believe that the proper translation of "Are they selling books?" should be "Eles estão vendendo livros?".

So is it just my old deaf ears, or does she say vende, not vendem? I play it over and over and never hear an M. Does Portuguese really sound like this or is she mumbling?

I hear "vendem", but they are very similar for non-native speakers.
