The often-reinforced cynical parts of my brain tell me that there has to be something shady about Duolingo, but evidence in my 229 days here has been to the contrary. Good job being awesome and/or hiding your shady doings, Duolingo! (Nice video!)

I'm just waiting for when you start serving me the French President's phone conversations to translate. I believe German learners have been doing Chancellor Merkel's for a while now ;)

But seriously, I am deeply impressed by the very innovative funding model for this site. With the web becoming a place that is (depressingly) more and more dependent on advertising revenue, it is very refreshing to see a website that has found a different revenue model and one which provides very real benefits to both parties involved (the learners and the publishers).

Right, because we know the world leaders go around saying things like "The lemon is mine, MINE, I tell you!" and "I am a penguin!" and secretive code sentences like "The elephant walks near the cat." Who knows what nefarious doings are afoot?

Too be fair, apparently President Kennedy did tell the people of Berlin that he was a doughnut (Ich bin ein Berliner).

This is a great video! Duolingo is the best language learning tool yet, and I've gone down the expensive Rosetta Stone road. :/ I want to offer some constructive criticism and I hope I don't get downvoted because of it. Your video says that "duolingo teaches you to read, right, listen, and speak." Duolingo absolutely does all of these! Except the speaking part may be a bit misleading. The only option that somewhat helps us with our speech is parroting what we've heard to a mike, and this is great for learning pronunciations, but not the best for conversational skills. Don't get me wrong, I'm extremely grateful. I just want to see duolingo rise to success, and I believe adding on to conversational skills training would definitely do that. :)

I agree. Duolingo is so much better than RS for sentence structure, grammar, vocab ... the list goes on and on. (Although you are right that [at some point] the speaking component could use an upgrade (see www.duolingo.com/comment/886931)).

Not really, There are still plenty of exercises where you have to read in english and say in a different language, but I do agree that the direction for improvement is to improve the use and accuracy of voice recognition

https://www.duolingo.com/Dr.Manhattan95

Yes I agree with you there. But I think a better way to work on conversational skills would probably involve responding to a question as opposed to just repeating a phrase in another language. But duolingo is still a great tool nevertheless.

When I tell people all my spanish language learning has been done from a mobile app, they do not believe it. Even I was skeptical in the beginning, but now I have had people saying to me that I speak like a native spanish speaker ;) (true story) . This really works people, just keep the owl happy!

I'm really starting to think duolingo is like a really fun learning game then a learning program because of all the cool things they added in, but another thing is that it very educational seeing I get to you use it when I visit Chile.

That's why I enjoy using Duolingo so much -- it's fun and educational at the same time. :)

Yeah, I agree, I cannot wait to actually speak to native speakers. I imagine it would be an incredible educational and eye-opening experience.

Very because just to be able to go on vacation and to speak with the natives! I agree totally!!

Great video and hope the entire program goes from strength to strength because it's the most enjoyable way I've found of learning a foreign language so far and even though I'm still very new to it, I feel like it's really going to help me improve! Thanks so much and congrats! :)

34 hours on Duolingo are equal to a whole university semester.

It would be awesome if we were able to see how much time we've spent on Duolingo!

I guess mine is gonna be horribly inflated! The number of times I've left lessons sitting open! :P Still, I like this idea.

https://www.duolingo.com/Red_Rat_Writer

Maybe "actively doing lessons". Like when you are actually in the lesson, and it stops timing if you left a lesson open for more than five minutes.

having an inactive timeout say 60 seconds should be enough to fix it so it would work. leaving it open once in a while wont inflate the numbers proportionality. The goal of having a rough idea of how much time spent is good enough.

I have been using duolingo one month and I have to say that is AMAZING! I am learning Portuguese and I am already level 10.. I have some friends from Brazil and now I can manage to have some conversations with them and they are really impressed that I learned by myself and that in fact I speak good. I also need to say that English is my second language, my native language is Spanish, so it is also useful because it helps me to practice my English while I learn Portuguese! Obrigado duolingo o melhor aplicativo do mundo
