Adding Finnish to Duolingo
We should try to add the Finnish language to Duolingo! Any other Finnish speakers out there?
there is a group on facebook full o people wishing for if and also a full cast of people waiting to begin to work on that. They explain the why Duolingo does not begin to make it, they say there is no enough search for this course.
At one point someone asked why Finnish was not on Duolingo and they were told (I believe by a staff member, but I'm not sure who) that there was "not enough interest" in Finnish.
This was despite the fact that Finnish regularly comes near the top in any informal polls run here, there are regular requests or queries like this post, and in any post entitled "what language do you want to learn" Finnish is usually upvoted to the top one or two comments.
There are a group of passionate Finnatics (TM) here, including quite a few who have volunteered to create the course. All we can do now is wait for Duolingo to decide to add it. And maybe just keep asking them nicely, so they know there is plenty of interest. :)
Another possibility: The staff might be using Google metrics (that is, search frequency for "duolingo finnish" and the like). There may be plenty of stated interest from people using the site already, but there may not be a lot of general interest, or at least, it may not appear such.
I think that there must be someone on Duolingo staff assigned to the course. Maybe that's what they meant: that they don't have anyone on staff who's willing to take on the course. If that's the case, then we're probably doomed.
Is there a way to bribe them? I'd give them all my lingots, but I don't expect it to be a good enough incentive. :)
Well, their goal is to add "all languages" so we have to get there eventually. I'm hoping that once Russian and Hungarian leave the incubator there will be more time, and we will get our chance. I thought that last time a few languages were released though. We just have to keep hoping.
I'm pretty sure every Finnatic here would give up all their lingots for a course. If I find someone we can bribe then I'll be telling everyone to chip in for the cause. ;)
Unfortunately that is all what I know. I dind't search more about this. But, If I am not wrong, that is the group on facebook which they are gathered. (https://www.facebook.com/groups/DuolingoFinnish/?fref=ts) I found then in a duolingo's chat. Maybe with deeper search you can find this chat, but I don't have a clue anymore. And I found this: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10153324649608829=gm.420114221507243=1 It is a picture that says what I say
Geez, if you give a lingot every time someone posts about Finnish, you must be broke by now!
Nope, it works as a pyramid scheme. I usually get lots in return. :)
And I don't see a better use for them anyway.
Not fluent one, still learning. Just here to show support to you all guys. It would be great to have official Finnish course here.
duolingo will make it we have lots of finny fans throws lingots in the air for mentioning finnish!
Alright, so I looked up all the recent requests for Finnish on Duolingo that I could. I have found 14 separate posts, including this one, from the last two months (that's roughly how long I'm on here). Each by a different person. And those are not even the most notorious fans who do not need to reiterate the question but happily jump in any of the discussions. And I might have missed some more posts.
I know that the number does not mean anything, but as I took the time, I thought I'd share it with you all in case you were wondering too. :)
Really, only 14? I suppose that doesn't count all the mentions in "What language do you want next," and is only "Let's have Finnish" posts themselves. :P
I counted only separate posts that had Finnish in the title (and were requests, not just some other info or lessons). And as the system here is basically unsearchable, I ended up searching for them on personal streams: those that either I or other people I know commented on. Which means that I might have missed some. If you look at it this way, and realize that it's one new post (user) every four days or so, it isn't that few.
Looking up all requests in other posts would be much harder.
