Not sure if this is the right place for this, but a few improvement suggestions...
the buttons for letters with accents are too small, making it difficult to see which one you need to click
I like having voice autoplay on, however it's really annoying when it repeatedly replays when you delete what you've written!
I use the timed practise a lot to strengthen sections. Often I want to look into the discussion on a question. It would be useful if the timer stopped while you were doing this...alternatively / also it would be good if you could could get into this via the review section after finishing the test.
If you get no questions correct on a timed practise, there is no link to practise again, only Go Back Home :-(
this post seems rather negative, so just editing to add: generally find duolingo excellent and very useful so keep up the good work!
you are right. These points are annoying if you use timed practise. And i like timed practise too.
Here are a few suggestions:
1) install a driver for the US International Keyboard (assuming you're doing this on Windows). You don't want the normal French keyboard, since that moves a lot of other keys around. But the letters with the accents are going to be unacceptably difficult to use compared with typing no matter what they do.
2) Agree 100% Also, you ought to be able to ask for voice for any French sentence that duolingo shows you. (E.g. lists of three choices, alternate translations, etc.)
3) Never use timed practice. There's no learning benefit to high-speed translation, and it isn't as effective (long-term) for strengthening as untimed practice is.
4) See #3
Agree with all that and also wondered why the app does not have features like timed practice. Would like to stress that I too think it is a most wonderful site.
I'll certainly try installing an international keyboard layout (not quite sure whether UK/US is the same) Still think making the buttons a bit bigger is something that would be a very easy duolingo improvement however!
Maybe you're right about the timed practise, (sounds like you've done some research here?) but as it's there, it'd be nice if it worked better...
You can read my research on how to make a Gold Duolingo Tree, if you want to.
My info on timed practice is anecdotal--from numerous people who've asked "why won't my tree stay gold?" Timed practice seems to be the fastest way to make a skill gold, BUT, it doesn't make it stay gold.
Timed immersive practice (such as the Berlitz method) is marvelous, but it involves asking you questions in your target language and having you answer (verbally) in real time. (You can pause, but you need to keep repeating the lesson until you can do it without pausing. Then you go to the next one.) That's probably where Duolingo got the idea for timed practice. But timed practice translating from one language to the next is just nuts--for learning purposes. I can't speak to how much fun it is purely as a game.
