I have got to level 25 and think it would be a great idea to keep on going to higher levels to motivate people to keep on practicing what they have learned or to encourage them to translate. What do you all think? (WoW! thanks for so many replies, yet another reason why Duolingo Rocks!)

I think it'd be fun to have to pay for level-ceiling raises with Lingots. Like WoW, we need some kind of a currency sink. This might also encourage people to get 3/3 hearts more.

It would be kind of nice to have something I want to spend lingots on other than the one that gives you more lingots after 7 days.

Yeah, and the thing is that once your streak really gets going they give you extra lingots per every 10 days or so. All you have to do is translate 10 points worth of an article in one language every day and you can keep your streak going. Plus you retain more that way.

If you want level-ceiling raises to work as sink, they will need to be the most expensive item in the store. After all, if you spend 25 lingots to increase the ceiling just 1 level, and you get 26 back for leveling up, it still only increases the amount of lingots available. Not saying it's a bad idea but to work as sink it will have to be expensive.

This is an awesome idea. I've got like 500 lingots and nothing to spend them on. I have no idea how many I'll have by the time I hit level 25 in one or more of my languages. This would probably also help to ensure that those who have finished their trees maintain them.

Not a bad comparison. Say what you will about WoW, they know how to keep users coming back for more grinding. "If I translate five more articles, I can reach level 27 tonight..."

In the absence of anything else to do once you reach level 25, I think adding more levels is an obvious solution.

I personally have mixed feelings about the leveling in Duolingo (and I'm a WoW player who just spent over an hour hunting down a player Goblin to finish the Hallow's End achievements ;-) ). "Gameification" is a great motivator for learning - the whole Skinner-esque dopamine surge when you hear the "ta-da!" of completing a level or lesson group or reach a milestone in your days-in-a-row streak - but while I might spend hours farming experience in a game like WoW, the same kind of "grinding" ("If I translate five more articles...") isn't an ideal way to learn a language. Most things should be learned in bits and chunks so our brains have time to file them away - cramming can be detrimental to the process, and yet it's encouraged by the "leveling".

So, like I said: mixed feelings. :-)

Badges, titles and so on means that level is not the only think gamers want to achieve. This is what I liked on Guild Wars MMO (max level 20 was easy too achieve, but there are so many titles) and what I like on StackExchange (http://stackexchange.com/). StackExchange is a net of questions and answers sites, including those dedicated to various languages, and others are being built in their version of Incubator (http://area51.stackexchange.com/); btw. I would appreciate anyone who would commit to help us with Latin (http://area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/48247/latin-language-usage?referrer=Qp0wRu9YYXKO5shO54dLOQ2). Not only because helping to build the site means progress towards few bedges to get there :-)

Even after you learn the mechanics of a language thoroughly, there is still all that idiom to master, especially in Spanish where so many countries have their own cultural spin. How about extra levels for idiom? I'd like to be an idiom savant ;-) Así es el mambo (Puerto Rican) - That's how it goes. Maybe Duo does idiom. I'm just at level 12 as of this writing. I can totally see a game spinning off of this, controlled by correctly translating sentences.

attack failed, you used the feminine article in place of the neuter article "Quick, we need heals!" "Okay, okay, just let me figure out how to conjugate this damn verb for the 2nd person plural!"

I like the idea of having a ceiling at level 25. I finished my Spanish tree around level 13 and now I'm on level 14, so it will take a lot of practice of the same material to get to 25. Then I hope to be fluent enough to just go out into the world to practice my language. I would like to know from those of you who have reached level 25, how fluent are you? I have been supplementing my Duolingo by watching Spanish movies and TV. I still miss a lot but can usually pick up the gist of things.

https://www.duolingo.com/-Alvina-

I took Spanish classes in college - immersive lectures, literature, writing essays, etc. - but never learned how to talk to people in real life. DL has at least taken me to the point that I can understand Spanish-language TV! :)

Translating ES EN made me level up like crazy, and accumulate silly amounts of lingots. I'm still not great at EN ES, and I wish DL had an easier way for us to translate in that direction. Developing that skill would be hugely helpful with improving output fluency as opposed to just the input. And I could use something to spend lingots on - nearly 1200 as of today, and I give them away right and left to helpful folks in the discussions.

I had no idea that the levels stop. I definitely agree with you! I would enjoy it if my levels don't just plateau. It seems like it shouldn't be too difficult to implement more levels, considering it's just a simple function of the number or skill points we have. (Though I don't really know much about programming..)

I wholeheartedly agree. I reached level 25 in German and am left wondering why there is this artificial cap on the levels? Obviously, programmatically, it’s no big deal. So, why suddenly remove an incentive for people to continue learning? Is there some other specific reason for taking that continued growth away?

If I could at least understand the logic behind it, I might not be so disappointed… (Here’s hoping one of the Duolingo admins can shed some light of logic on this and explain what most of us are missing… what the thought process was when they made the decision to artificially cut off growth at 25…)

I have finished French and I don't do it anymore. So you want more levels on everthing so people won't get bored and lose they fluency in languages? Is that what you mean?

I don't think it makes sense, each new level involves earning more and more points.Soon the number of points we have to earn will become too large to deal with If the levels are to go above 25 then I feel that there must be an easier way to level up

I think it encourages us to do more and more translating. That is how it is working for me. I have to get 1,500 points between lvls 16 and 17. I'm doing a lot more translating than I was before (also it's getting easier to translate bc of what i'm learning :D)
