Boycott Done

You probably don't care about what I have to say, and I'm sorry, that's my fault. It was brash to boycott a well-meaning, great site that I am obliged to for greatly improving my French. I still hold to it that I don't personally appreciate some of the BuzzFeed articles, but when I saw things like @Zach, a diligent studier, quit Duolingo, I decided I was causing too much havoc about something that doesn't really interfere with my experience on Duolingo, since I'm an English speaker and will not have any part in translating those articles. I apologize also for posting a discussion that was downvoted so many times, it was cluttering up the Discussion area, and I had just denounced cluttering and being a troll. @Zach, I guess you're not ever probably going to read this now, since you're gone, but, we really do appreciate the good suggestions and comments you gave to all of the Duoers. I never meant to have my post be the one where @Zach decides he's done with this great site. My apologies to everyone.

Thanks Mats.Ceascui for your comment. I appreciate you voicing your concerns, and the team is definitely continuing to take a close look at the content. Thank you! We do encourage different opinions (that's what makes language learning so interesting for many of us- the varying interpretations and ways of saying the same thing). But, as some of our moderators have mentioned we want to keep it respectful. This is a place for everyone to share ideas and thoughts on language learning. In short- your thread did not cause a member to quit :)

I appreciate what you're saying here, Mats. But I have no idea what the heck happened, care to explain?

Is there a lesson to be learned (by several of us) about handling things (on Duo and elsewhere) we do not agree with?

it all happened during Europe was sleeping (including me): http://www.duolingo.com/comment/1033614
the "deactivated user" in the discussion above used to be Zach, who deleted himself as everyone besieged him (or at least that's what he felt, let's try and remain neutral).

Thanks for the link! It's a shame that Zach decided to leave this site, his ideas and viewpoints were important in the sense that he challenged status quo and made us think. Hope he'll not leave this site altogether and is somewhere hidden ready to strike back. :))

He was more of an antagonist to many people and served to fuel several too heated debates. If he could still have his views, but share them in a more civil way, we'd be happy to have him back, but as it stands, he couldn't and most likely never will.
So Zach left? Were there any parting words and such? It is quite sudden, he seemed to enjoy learning here.... I didn't ever have anything against him or his posts, as you said, his comments made many think. I agreed with quite a few of his views, however at times the way he wrote them would be a bit harsh, as you probably saw me mention in the other boycott post. I don't always side with the "status quo", but I am not as quick to challenge it, as, from personal experience, that normally does not go as planned...

Yes, his username was Zach1337. He had a picture of the Duolingo owl (from the Kindle app icon) as his profile picture.

Too bad he's gone. I liked him. (Guess I never saw his other side.)

That's really royal. That makes you much more honorable than a pottymouth.

I wouldn't worry about it. I'm pretty sure Zach now has 10+ different accounts and is downvoting anyone that disagreed with him.
Edit: To avoid confusion in case there was some, this is merely my impression based on events that transpired. I have no proof.

Yep, that's exactly my impression, too. @Mats: don't worry. Everything is fine. And if people quit because they can't stand somebody disagreeing with them or others trying to keep a discussion civil, they're probably better off studying alone.

He didn't give the impression, at least to me and from from his previous comments, that he is this type of person.

I thought that's what might have been happening. He seemed to be downvoting me, and especially the moderators and kristen.

I unfortunately have amassed 7 email accounts.
- A hotmail for personal friends and family
- A gmail I share with my wife for e-billing, banking, and Google calendar
- A gmail account that I don't mind losing which I use purely to sign up for garbage like facebook, kobo, news alerts etc...
- An email at work
- 2 email accounts from the 2 universities I'm taking online courses at
- A default email account given by my internet provider

Thank you everyone for understanding, I think we (esp me) have learned a lot about how to not start fights in Duo.
