Eu tenho uma gata = I have a (female) cat / eu tenho três gatas = I have three (female) cats. Ela é uma gata = it is a cat / she is beautiful. Ela é muito gata = she is very beautiful. Tenho dois gatos = I have two (male/ male+female) cats.

A minha gata está com fome (My cat is hungry). Aquelas são gatas femininas (Those are female cats). Os gatos dela jogou com a bola (Her cats played with the ball).

As regras são que "gato" é masculino e "gata" é feminino (The rules are that "gato" is masculine and "gata" is feminine). Hence the masculine and feminine endings "-o" and "-a".

Nice example. Just a small error here (singular instead of plural). It should be "Os gatos dela jogaram com a bola". The word "jogou" is singular, like "he played". And "jogaram" is a plural, like "they played".

You're right. I'm so used to writing down the singular form haha.
