Famous and popular aren't the same thing

famous - known about by many people.
popular - liked, admired, or enjoyed by many people

It's "відомий".

i'd say that "famous" is "славетний", and "відомий" = "well-known"

I would say that "славетний" is "glorious, reputable", that said you have to be popular to be called that. You can have "bad fame" (недобра слава), but you can't use any "bad" adjectives with "славетний"

'Славний' (masc.) 'славна' (fem.) 'славне' (neut.) can also be used to describe someone/ something 'famous'/'glorious'.
