Looking for TV Series in French!
Hello, I'm a total tv series addict and I figured I could turn this to my advantage by watching something in the languages I'm learning.
I remember watching Les Revenants a few years back, and I really liked it.
Do you have any other series to recommend?
Just to keep it tidy and make the information more easily accessible, here's a list of all the series you and others recommended:
- Les revenants
- Maison close
- Ainsi soient-ils
- Un village français
- Les Témoins
- Caméra café
- Un gars, un fille
- Plus belle la vie
- Fais pas ci, fais pas ça
- Scènes de ménage
- Le visiteur du futur
Thanks again for your help!
If you liked Les Revenants, then you should look for Canal+ series (it's a french TV channel which also produces its own series).
My favorite french TV series have a short lenght (a few minutes) and they are more like gags :
Caméra Café : very popular in the 00's, the camera is in the coffe machine and never move, and you see all the life of the company
Bref : 2011-2012, it has been very popular, it's about a parisian guy telling little stories about daily life
un gars, une fille : (with Jean Dujardin), it's about a couple and their daily life, it's kind of sarcastic and caricatural but still fun
I sort of know Caméra Café, because they did an italian version in the 00's as well. I'll look into it, and into Canal+ series. Merci beaucoup!
Extr@ was specifically made for people learning a foreign language. The French version has 13 episodes (24-25 minutes each). They are on YouTube, with French subtitles.
Tunnel is quite good, it's a thriller based on the Swedish/Danish show "Bron". It was produced by both France and the UK. In short, a woman is found dead on the border between France and the UK (in the tunnel beneath the Channel) and both polices have to work on the case. The show is in both French and English, it's pretty instructive.
Plus belle la vie is a sitcom. It's pretty basic, BUT what's great about sitcoms is that every episode is more or less the same... So you learn tons of vocabulary, because the same words come back over and over again. And there are many episodes, so it's almost a limitless source of study.
Small formats include Fais pas ci, fais pas ça or Scènes de ménages, both are humoristic. A few years ago, Un gars, une fille was quite successful (it's what made Jean Dujardin quite well-known here), and you can find many episodes on YouTube. It's about a couple, both members being quite stereotyped (the boy is a bit of a macho, and the girl loves shopping). It's really funny.
Canal + also produced Maison close, about the life in a brothel, so not for everybody. I've also heard about Ainsi soit-il, which follows the lives of young men wanting to become priests... There's also Les Borgia, about, well, the Borgias and their lives.
On YouTube, a small production got quite a few fans, that's Le Voyageur du futur. Produced by a few friends, it's composed of four seasons of short episodes, and you can see the progression of the group from two-minute-long Internet videos to fifteen-minute episodes which were broadcast on TV. It's completely absurd and funny, you should check it out. It's full of slang, perfect to get used to oral French.
That's all I can think about at the moment... Bon visionnage :)
Tunnel sounds good, as well as the Canal+ shows you mentioned. I'll give them a try. Merci!
Recently here in the UK, Channel 4 (the channel that showed Les Revenants a few years ago), has been showing a series called Witnesses (Les Temoins). If you are in the UK you may be able to watch this on 4OD I think, it may be on there as the series has recently finished.
It is a pretty dark programme like Revenants, so you should like it. It features murderers filling showhomes with dead bodies with cryptic messages for a former top police detective, amongst other things. He has to come out of retirement and team up with a woman who he once trained, to figure it all out. The woman is the main character more than he is though.
I still have one more episode of this to watch, but it is really good and I would really recommend this programme.
I loved the french tv series, Witnesses, too! I watched it on NetFlix with french audio and english subtitles. Here's a review: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/05/12/arts/television/review-witnesses-now-streaming-unpeels-an-eerie-mystery.html
How do you have a 697 days streak? Je vous admire. Merci pour les recommandations!
