How does Duolingo earn?

Ciao a tutti!

This is really only for my own curiosity, and I hope I'm not asking questions that I shouldn't, but I've been looking into the jobs section of Duolingo. There seems to be quite a team, and the company is growing in use beautifully across the globe... but I've wondered, how does it make its money?

I mean, there are investors, sure... but how is the company making its money, when largely the app is free?

Happy learning all xx

They do not earn a lot of money yet, they have venture capital money. They originally were going to make money translating documents, but the plan has changed. They are still making little money from translations and from the testing center. The business model is evolving.

For the moment it doesn't make really (a lot of) money, I believe.

One of the way they think to earn money is through their testcenter platform where one can take a 20$ language test (only available for English test for the moment) that Duo works to be recognized/accepted by universities.

I was thinking the same thing! Shouldn't there be a donate button for the generous people?

Grazie a tutti!

It's certainly interesting (and humbling) to think that someone/some people out there are effectively running this site off of their own backs, for the good of language study as a whole, and not simply for personal gain.

I constantly recommend this app/the website to literally everyone I know in the language learning world. I think it is fantastic! I can remember installing it the first time round (years ago, before I decided to learn Italian seriously), and the improvements to the facilities since then are outstanding!

I definitely agree with you @EpicPowerHero! If Duolingo set up a way to take donations towards its cause, it may not make a lot of money, but surely every little helps towards its already blossoming journey to greatness. I would certainly donate!

Happy learning everyone! :)
