Bring Finnish To Duolingo

Terve kaikki! Hello everybody! Let's bring Finnish to Duolingo. I hear people saying Finnish is so hard, but it isn't so let me tell you why it isn't hard at all! Firstly Finnish isn't an Indo European language so that means it's a whole new experience! Finnish doesn't have gender for nouns unlike many other languages. Finnish grammar is very straight forward and reasonable. Finnish vocabulary is easy to memorize because words consist of roots like: Kirja=book Kirjasto=library Kirjoittaa= to write. kirjailija=writer Kirjuri= book keeper kirje=letter and so on this makes Finnish easy to learn Finnish uses a different system of language instead of it being synthetic. Let's make Finnish easy to learn for everyone through Duolingo!

Yes! Finnish is also a synthetic language which means it likes to put words together and make one word for one phrase like: juoksentelisinkohan this means i wonder if i should run around aimlessly. All that started from the word: juosta. Also Finnish is incredibly easy to pronounce, because Finnish writes everything like it is said with only three extra letters ö,ä and å. Å is not used in the Finnish language.

Moi! I'm Finnish! In real world we quite rarely use words that long here, but prefer real sentences :) But I would like to see a Finnish course here, because I feel it would really come in need this day, as we have lot of emmigrants and refugees coming here, and I think duolingo would really help them a lot on starting their life here!

Very much! Have you tried applying in the incubator? I would, but I'm not fluent in Finnish :(

Very true! It's logical and formulaic, and pronunciation is unimaginably straightforward! It's a gorgeous, flowing, enchanting language, and should be preserved and promulgated through Duolingo! I studied Finnish while living in Finland several years ago. Now that I don't live there, it's nearly impossible to maintain or improve, since classes are very, very few in my area of the US. Please provide Finnish in Duolingo!

I believe you just changed my mind on Finnish. "Finnish is hard" But from what I just read about the vocabulary and the fact there's no gender for nouns. I think I'd give it a shot after all. :)

The other good thing is that we have a lot of loan words like: baari, pyramidi, bussi, kahvi, kulta, vampyyri, pallo and so on. Also we love to put words together to create compound nouns like jääkaappi=refrigerator literally meaning ice closet, tietokone=computer literally meaning knowledge machine and pilvenpiirtäjä= skyscraper literally meaning drawer of clouds or cloud's drawer. English has some loan words from Finnish like sauna and salmiakki= a Finnish candy. And finally You Will see how Easy Finnish is if You just Take the cases one or two at a time.

If you would, please contribute and start Finnish for English speakers. I know it's a pushy request, but you'd be doing us Finnish-Americans a HUGE favor. My grandfather never taught my dad, and so on... My grandfather told me that children in school would look down upon the kids who couldn't speak English in school and shun them. Even though he was fluent and spoke Finnish! I guess it was a cultural thing back in the day with Finnish immigrants to the US. In other words, being of Finnish heritage and barely being able to speak anything past introducing myself, good day, colors, so on and so forth, is really embarrassing. I get asked all the time, "can you speak Finnish?" En puhun. :( There is a HUGE movement for Finnish Americans to want to learn to speak Finnish. There just isn't anything worthwhile out there that is actually practical.

Oh, you're Finnish too.. :D But you're right, our language is not so hard after all!

Olen suomalianen ja americalianen. En puhun Suomia. It is a shame. You being Turkish.....but a Hungarian speaker shouldn't have too much problem with Finnish. But, I never get the chance to speak Finnish with anyone, unless I move to the upper peninsula of Michigan, northern Wisconsin, the Kenai peninsula of Alaska, or just plain old Finland, I'll never learn Finnish. Europe is a much easier place to learn many languages. You'll run into someone eventually. It would be like me running into someone who speaks Texan, Californian, Floridian and so forth. But, we all just speak English or Spanish. My Spanish is great, I can even speak Elizabethan English and understand Middle English. I wish I could understand Icelandic, which is even an older cousin or mother of old, if not older, version of English. But, with a most fantastic and much appreciated Duloligo (I'm totally not getting paid for this! haha!) it could actually be an avenue for me to learn Finnish.

Hi MichCOdel,

If you want to make a [course] suggestion, we encourage you to visit the forums and making a search for suggestions that have been made in the past, and adding your vote and comments to those existing posts [and thus to not create a new discussion]. That will make the request more popular and make it stand out more, encouraging more people to add their votes. :)

From Help Center: "How can I suggest a new language course?"

Note: Texts in between square brackets are additions of mine.

September 12, 2015

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/widle

This would be such a great suggestion if the discussion search was any useful. I tried to look up old posts requesting Finnish last week myself and the search results were so random. They don't even show how old the displayed posts are, until you open them, and there are no filtering or sorting options. Pretty frustrating experience, especially with such popular words like language names.

In the end I decided to give up search and go through all posts, backwards in time, even though one has to keep waiting as the page loads new batches. I was patient enough to get about two months back, but then I'm probably more patient than average.

(Mind you, I'm not trying to criticize you for bringing it up, I just don't find the suggestion from the Help Center as helpful as they might think it is.)

September 12, 2015

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jrikhal

Looking for Finnish AND incubator in the search engine-returns first a 1-year-old, and highly upvoted, discussion about Finnish: here. ;)

You can also not use the search engine and just scroll one page down on the "Most Popular" tab of EN general forum. The same discussion is there (bottom of the "second page".

September 12, 2015

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/widle

I've apparently found and upvoted that one already; I suppose I've already seen most Finnish related posts around here; thanks anyway. :)

When it comes to people who post these questions, I believe those who realize they should search for the incubator already know better then to reiterate the same questions again and again.

I know a lot of people who would love a Finnish course on Duolingo!

January 12, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Tauriainen

I'm one! My grandfather told me that kids would pick on other kids who didn't speak English. I understand the assimilation, but I really and absolutely "could've" had the chance to learn Finnish if otherwise. But, it was what it was. I get it. English is a bizarre and complicated language. But, I grew up with it! I only know what Finnish my grandfather has said to me, if and when he talks, and would love to speak it. I've tried some things on my own, but there is little "real world" support on learning it. I just know that when it listen to it, I can pick up on some words, have little knowledge of what context it's being used, and I love the vowel harmony and cadence it has. It's so different.

You would make my mother very happy by bringing Finnish to Duolingo! She is a third generation american whose father would occasionally speak it to her as a child. She's been wanting to reconnect with that part of her heritage for years. This would be an excellent way to do it! :)

One of my biggest idols, J.R.R Tolkien once mentioned in a interview when discussing the origins of the Elvish Language (which is approx. 40% of Finnish) in the Middle-Earth mythology; "“It [discovering Finnish] was like discovering a wine-cellar filled with bottles of amazing wine of a kind and flavour never tasted before. It quite intoxicated me."

I wish you knew what a statement like that means to me, also to all of my family at family reunions. Most of them know what I do. This is hard to say personally, but I cannot speak Finnish! I know so little that I don't even try! The older part of my family does. But, They just don't pass it on in America. That's ok. I understand it, and even agree with their point. But, I do not I agree with their actions. However, it's important to me, my wife (who is German) and my children. My children, however, are half German, and a quarter Finnish. The other half of me is English, Scottish, Irish, Cherokee. They have an easier chance of speaking fluent Cherokee where we live. That is perfectly alright, but Finnish is still there. I'm proud of the Winter War. I am proud of Sisu, I'm proud of all things Finnish, just like any true Finn would. Everyone over here is from so many different places. All languagues would be hard, but it still important.

I would love to learn Finnish, but it's not an easy language. The people who say it's hard say that because of it's seventeen cases, wich make it hard to learn wich case you should use.

September 12, 2015

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/widle

The number of cases seems overwhelming, but they are (at least partly) organized - for example the locatives make sense as they are, and each case is just a single ending, the same for all words. I'm just a beginner and can't claim to have mastered them, but I can see that it's just a matter of practice. Sure, there are bound to be some tricky bits ahead, but that's with all languages.

I still think that Czech (my native) cases are a lot more difficult - "only" seven of them, but multiply that by three genders and there are 4-6 declension patterns for each gender. That's quite a heap to memorize.

September 12, 2015

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/MichCOdel

Well that has a simple and easy answer to it! Don't overwhelm yourself by learning all of them at once! Take the cases one by one and learn when and why they are used this will make it easy to learn the cases and is the reason why duolingo is the perfect place to learn Finnish!

September 12, 2015

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/MichCOdel

The other good thing is that we have a lot of loan words like: baari, pyramidi, bussi, kahvi, kulta, vampyyri, pallo and so on. September 12, 2015

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/KaramataBG

When there are no genders and different paradigms of inflection, cases are not so hard ;) It's like learning the different propositions in English. If there were genders (like in Indo-European languages), then it would be an absolute chaos.
