Private chat rooms.

Hey I have been talking to my friends for awhile and we all think that we should be able to have private chat rooms.so other people can`t see what were writing.

Hey zaxman01- thanks for the suggestion. We're thinking about some new ways for members to connect.

There are pros and cons to this, if implemented, there will need to be more moderators, and also everyone will need to provide their ages. Parents may be concerned about their young children chatting to older adults privately, and many people will easily lie about their ages.

A private chat-room will be a nightmare to moderate without strict controls, which will end up making it not private (moderators/staff will need to see it). On the other hand, private conversations will allow people to try and practice the language more without feeling embarrassed. Personally, I think public chatrooms are the only viable option unless proper controls are used to moderate, restrict children's use, and prevent abuse.

This was worked on during the Duolingo Hackathon. None of us are sure if or when the team will implement it, or to what extent it has been developed.

I honestly think that private messaging would be a better option for duolingo. Mainly because there are other platforms that are much better for chatting, like skype for instance, even facebook chat if that's your thing, taking into account what Dessamator said as well, in terms of staff having to moderate and ensure that the site stays safe for people of all ages. Plus I'm a assuming a simple mail-like function, inbox, outbox sort of thing would be easier to program and implement than a function that enables you to create a private chatroom.

Plus I really think private messaging would help in the process of reporting something or someone to the staff without it being viewed by everyone. And giving contact details privately to someone, like your facebook or e-mail.

I agree with you. Sometimes we need to give our contact information to someone, but it's impossible to do it here without showing it to everybody. Maybe we could just select "private" or "public" when posting something on a person's stream. Inbox/Outbox is also a good option, like you said.
