Una mala combinación
The idea shown here at duolingo is not bad, nevertheless has a couple of weak points. First some translations at the exercises are just "Horrible", trying to translate sentences literally is just an error. It is one of the most common errors done by beginners, it is also seen by taking a look at the translations done by some users!. Another thing that I think is wrong here is the possibility of pass a level just translating some text, to do a good translation a bit of "theoretical practise" (and a bit of imagination) is needed. Here the system here seems to be focused to translate texts sentence by sentence (I hope it was just the text I picked up where the first user just did a disaster) and It can't be done literally. Some times to go from one language to another two sentences can be join into a single one or one sentence could be split between two or more.
To improve the method I just propose a new combination where to finish a lesson each student should translate a paragraph from a random text, this way all theory would be done and a practical plus would be given to the method
And please, to all those who learn just translating texts... Don't translate literally! it is an error!
I agree! A few times I have traslated some sentences and then I get a message in my mail-box about someone who corrected my sentence, and I found out that the traslation is wrong and my translation has been replaced, it is annoying to get back at the text and correct it again myself.
Muy buena tu idea, de verdad es que creo yo que es uno de los mayores errores que se pueden cometer, mas aun con los phrasel verbs. Saludos.
i dont speak english, but i think do you have the reason. i would like that the program add random texts to translate, so it is not for habituation to solve problems
No se puede traducir «tener la razón» como «to have the reason», eso no tiene sentido en inglés. Debe ser «I think you're right» o sea «I agree». ;)
It is something that I always wondered, How do they choose the best translation? I mean when translating texts. The one that gets more points it's supposed to be the best? I'm not a native english speaker, so, I make a lot of mistakes and I love to be corrected, it's the best way to learn but like travinch said, it can be annoying to find out that your translation has been replaced for another one that is much worse, probably even using google translator or something similar.
As a programmer, if I was at the duolingo team, i would propose to set up a learning machine which is a methodology widely used to solve this kind of problems. It could be implemented by sending the same sentence to a number of uses and see how they translate it. Anyway this is not the point here (it is duolingo business) but the best way to learn a language, and from my point of view, translating a text with no basic knowledge is not a good idea
You have a good ideas if you didn't contact to Duolingo yet, If I could be you as a programmer try to contact Duolingo and showing to them your beta software lite how could be Duoilingo in that way you are contribute to help thousands of persons around the world to learn new languages and who knows they might be even buy your complete software. Here is the contact email firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com
Have a nice day and good luck!
I'm agree, you have all the reason! We need to improve our english and The Duolingo Team tries to help us, but in a very simple way!
