No, because a newspaper would be un journal (as in one journal, or "a journal") and le = the.

I put read a news paper... why is that wrong. Is it because it is "le journal" not "un journal."?

This entire study process would be so much more conducive to learning, if some type of short tutorial would be provided before each exercise. One simple mistake and you are not given any credit for the rest of the entire sentence that you translated correctly. You people need to make some small changes to this entire experience. This tedium of trial and error is very discouraging to students.
