The Italian should have been written in the conditional tense if the only accepted answer was expected to be in the conditional.

I have done, It's nice to know I'm not the only one who agrees.

"would" doesn't have to be conditional. It can be a habitual past. "When I had that job, I would never get home before nine."

Okay, I understand. I'll rephrase my initial comment then, I think that the answer 'They were never putting themselves to work' should have been accepted. Mr Viaggiatore, If you don't mind me asking, not only do you seem to be an Italian master, but you manage to help other users on just about every discussion there is. How do you do it?

Your translation sounds good.

Thanks for asking. I'm a master on good days. I have a lot of spare time. There's no more to it than that.

You, sir, are a master and modest! It has accepted 'They never put themselves to work' if it didn't before.
