WEEK #30:
MINNESÅNG (common noun/en-word, pl: minnesånger)
1. a type of song sung by German troubadours (called minnesångare in Swedish) in the 1100-1200s, usually about love or heroes and maidens and often accompanied by the lute.

Some extra info from devalanteriel: This minne is an old loan from German and simply means "love". So minnesång means "love song", even though minne no longer means "love" in Swedish. This meaning of minne is actually still in use in some Low German dialects, although I think no High German dialects use it any longer except as a literary term.

The common topic of these songs was the love between two people who could never be together. We call it hövisk kärlek ("courtly love") in Sweden since those people were inevitably at some king's court ("court" = hov, or Hof in German), and it's a very common theme of that era, although much of the terminology about it stems from 19th century romanticising.

First, thank you for this. I appreciate reading your weekly words, it's always fun to see what you'll dig up next. :)

However, I'm afraid the explanation is partly incorrect in this case. The word does not translate to "memory song" (which would have been minnessång), as this minne is an old loan from German and simply means "love".

Again, I hope you don't take this as criticism. Please keep posting. Maybe dig up the word kyng some time? :)
