Slow Finnish - Chapter 4c - Onko sinulla lemmikkejä?
Adessiivin yksikkö - The adessive singular
Let's revise. The adessive is usually used when something is on something.
- Kirjat ovat tuolilla. The books are on the chair.
- Koira istuu lattialla. A/the dog sits on the floor.
The adessive singular is formed by adding -lla/llä to the stem of the word. The stem of the adessive singular is similar to the stem of the nominative plural.
- tyttö, tytöt; tytöllä girl
- ranta, rannat; rannalla beach
- silta, sillat; sillalla bridge
The adessive singular is used with the 3rd person singular form of olla to express having something.
- minulla on
- sinulla on
- hänellä on
- meillä on
- teillä on
- heillä on
Names and nouns and their attributes are all in the adessive singular when expressing having something.
- Kaisalla on koira. Kaisa has a dog.
- Iloisella naisella on vihainen kissa. The happy woman has an angry cat.
- Surullisella miehellä on kaksi suurta hevosta. A/the sad man has two large horses.
- Mukavalla tytöllä on viisi pientä hamsteria. A/the nice girl has five small hamsters.
-pp-, -kk- and -tt- are reduced to -p-, -k- and -t-.
- tyttö, tytöt; tytöllä girl
- kokki, kokit; kokilla cook
-nk- changes into -ng-.
- vanki, vangit; vangilla prisoner
-nen becomes -sella/sellä.
- ihminen, ihmiset; ihmisellä humanbeing, person
- vihainen, vihaiset; vihaisella angry
- suomalainen, suomalaiset; suomalaisella Finnish
Here are some familiar nouns in the adessive singular.
- ihminen, ihmiset; ihmisellä humanbeing, person
- mies, miehet; miehellä man
- nainen, naiset; naisella woman
- lapsi, lapset; lapsella child
- poika, pojat; pojalla boy
- tyttö, tytöt; tytöllä girl
And some useful adjectives.
- mukava, mukavat; mukavalla nice
- iloinen, iloiset; iloisella happy, joyful
- onnellinen, onnelliset; onnellisella happy, content
- surullinen, surulliset; surullisella sad
- vihainen, vihaiset; vihaisella angry
- vanha, vanhat; vanhalla old
- nuori, nuoret; nuorella young
- uusi, uudet; uudella new
- kaunis, kauniit; kauniilla beautiful
- komea, komeat; komealla handsome
- pieni, pienet; pienellä small
- suuri, suuret; suurella large

I keep forgetting which case to use (noticing whether there's a number there or not). So in case you're wondering, yes, these exercises will be still useful in the future.

Do you mean, whether to use nominative or partitative. If there is a number before the person/animal that has something, it is still in the adessive.
- Kolmella koiralla on kolme pentua. (The) three dogs have three puppies.
- Kahdella miehellä on koira. (The) two men have a dog.
Really nice :). I'm studying Finnish every Tuesday evening but it's good to get some of the thing again in another way.
But I would love to have Finnish as a part of Duolingo.
