It should be accepted, in my opinion. I say 'de metro nemen' a lot... :)

Technically, the original "correct" answer should be removed as a possibility since it is not an exact translation, just as many other possible but not exact translations are "incorrect" :)

I am also wondering why this isn't accepted

I don't understand why 'mijn moeder gaat de metro....' was marked as one of the correct translations. I know it makes sense, but doesn't that mean she GOES on the metro? and we were supposed to translate TAKES? (neemt)

It's weird that the 'gaat met de metro' answer is accepted. Normally the translations here should be quite literal, and 'goes by metro' is different from 'takes the metro'. I'd expect only the 'neemt de metro' answer to be correct.

This "correct" answer is not exactly the same as the English. The English "takes" should be "neemt" not "gaat met" (goes with)

What about 'Mijn moeder rijdt op de metro naar de stad'? If not, why?

we don't go 'op de metro'; we go 'met de metro'. I'm afraid there's no why.
