Names in the accusative
Is it normal to put a name into the accusative in Esperanto? As part of my study I am reading “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz”, this translation:
La Mirinda Sorĉisto de Oz by L. Frank Baum translated by Donald Richard
I’ve noticed that the name Dorothy, Doroteo, is sometime in the accusative:
Esperanto: Toto ridigis Doroteon, kaj protektis ŝin kontraŭ griziĝo simila al tiu de ĉio alia.
Original English: It was Toto that made Dorothy laugh, and saved her from growing as gray as her other surroundings.
Is this the conventional way to handle a name in the accusative? Also is it normal to change a character name, that is, Dorothy to Doroteo?
Proper names that end in -o naturally add an -n in the accusative: Mi vidis Markon, Petron kaj Johanon.
As for changing names: that's partly a fashion thing. It used to be popular but now, many people keep names constant while some "Esperantify" it.
So three people called Clive might end up in Esperantujo calling themselves Clive, Klajvo, and Klivo.
Traditional names such as "Petro" and "Johano" are perhaps more commonly adopted in Esperanto than turning "newer" names into Esperanto. But there's nothing wrong with keeping the original name.
It also used to be common to add -in- to female names (Mariino = Maria), but that's also rare these days, I think.
It's a question of preference, my name is Lucas, but my Esperanto-name is Luko, which I don't like too much, but I use it because I prefer names to be able to take the accusative. However, a not-esperantified name such as "Dorothy" could take the accusative adding -on "Mi vidis Dorothy-on", or just "Mi vidis Dorothy", in the latter, neither "mi" nor "Dorothy" take the accusative, but it's obvios that "mi" could take the accusative, so if it doesn't, it's Dorothy which is in the accusative case.
I don't like some translations such as Vilhelmo, but I do like esperantified names which keep sounding similar, and I prefer a name I can read, I mean, a name in Esperanto characters at least, because some russian names are difficult to guess ;) EDIT: sorry for the messy answer, I'm sleepy right now u.u
