The English translation is wrong, in my opinion. I would say "He managed to do it," since otherwise, "He managed it" is using "manage" in the sense of leading or administering, rather than achieving.

I don't think "to do it" is necessary. We finally managed it for example would not usually be understood to mean administer. It all depends on the context.
