Ou vs Où

How can I tell the difference between ou (or) and où (where) in spoken French? Both of them are pronounced the same.

Great question! It's all about context. Think about how you'd use each word.

"Where are you going?" You can't confuse the "where" with the "or" in that case.

If you heard Aimez-vous un chat ou un chien?
you can tell you're being asked a choice - not a where-question.

(Désolé - I'm lousy at forming questions in French still!!)

And we do the same in French ;o) We replace in our head whether it is somewhere or no :o)

There isn't any difference in pronounciation. The only way to know is to understand the phrase and detect if this is a "where" or an "or".
