How do I become fluent?
I understand that Duolingo isn't going to get you fluent in Dutch, but does anyone know how I could with other free apps or methods. I currently watch programmes and read-aloud books on youtube, which seems to be working pretty well, but can you suggest ideas for other things that I could be doing?
Also, how have people fitted in speaking practice as it doesn't seem this course has this type of excersise. Sometimes I repeat what I have heard but it doesn't seem that I am really 'thinking' in the language, instead I am just translating in my head.
Google 'language exchange', there's a number of websites where you can find a partner to speak with. It generally works that you teach each other your native language. I've been skyping the same partner for over a year, we have actually become great friends and have even met in person. I really recommend finding a partner.
You could hit me up if you want to find a language partner - I am a Dutch native (: I can't really recommend anything else than what the others already said, though you might try to read books - not only listen to them as well. Any immersion, whatever form, will help you, I think.
Thanks ;) Also as long as I have you, is "me too" "ik ook"? And what about me neither? Also would ik zwem graag or ik hou van zwemmen be more like "I like to swim"? Also is it "ik hou van" or "ik houd van"? Also if a conversation like this happened: Person 1: jij bent geen man Person 2: ik ben wel! Is the second person correct, would ik ben wel mean I am!? Oh my sorry I came on to ask you one question and suddenly I had a million. Oops. But thank you so much :)
- 'Ik ook' is 'me too'. 'Ik ook niet', is 'me neither'.
- 'Ik zwem graag' and 'ik hou van zwemmen' both mean 'I like to swim', though 'ik hou van zwemmen' means 'I love swimming/I love to swim'. But both are correct.
- Both 'hou' and houd' are correct :)
- This is hard to explain, but the 'ik' and 'wel' should be turned around; 'ben ik wel!' is correct. And don't worry about asking too much! I'm glad to help. I also have a Facebook profile in case you have more questions :)
