In Ukrainian:
- й = The "y" sound in "yes"
- и = The "é" sound in "compré"(Spanish)
- і = The "ee" sound in "wheel"

Given that, Ukrainian mixes two vowels into some letters. One of them is the ї, which represents [ й + і ].

You may listen to it on http://forvo.com/languages/uk/. Just find there some words with these letters. For exemple:

  • й - Йосип (Joseph), мій (my/mine)
  • и - мити (to wash), руки (hands)
  • і - піт (sweat), кіт (a cat), лід (ice)
  • ї - їжак (a hedgehog), їсти (to eat)
