What should you do with your English learning after duolingo?

Hi I am from South Korea and I have studied English from a young age. Even though I am not a native speaker, I want to share some tips with you all. I think Duolingo provides a good foundation for English. Here are some tips for English learning after you complete the Duolingo course:

Watch Movies, dramas with English subtitles [to improve your LISTENING and speaking skills] I know English has a lot of accents, so it might be difficult to understand people speaking in English. My advice is to use subtitles. You can choose to memorise the words, but don't memorise the words in isolation. You need to learn the words in context. I wasted 2 years memorising words from movies after copying the words in vocabulary lists, because I didn't learn the words in context.

I also used this technique called Shadowing which is basically repeating what people in movies/reality shows say. For example, if someone says something, you immediately repeat what he or she says. It's very effective if you memorise what they say, because the grammar is normally correct. Then you use the sentences you memorised, and then change the verbs and nouns to fit whatever you want to say in the future.

Get a tutor [to improve your SPEAKING skills] It was only after I got a friend to tutor me in English that my speaking skills improved tremendously. It doesn't matter if you cant find a tutor in your area. Find a friend who speaks English well and maybe pay him or her a good rate. You can pay your friend a lower rate than the crazy rates English teachers charge (like $70/hour, which is too expensive). Don't go crazy with using the textbook in your one-to-one classes. Use it at home, and try to have fun talking to your tutor/friend. This way, your friend can correct your mistakes when you speak.

Improve your WRITING skills: http://seancoman.com This part is the hardest. I couldn't find anything that could help me in writing. The only option I could find was to go to a class, which normally has random writing exercises. The issue is that most English classes arent focused on just writing. They focus on writing, speaking, reading and everything.

So I tried to find another solution. Sean Coman is pretty good: they have teachers who focus on coaching you whenever you submit a write-up. You can write a short story, an email, or a journal entry, and then the teachers will mark your work, correct the mistakes and tell you how to write better. So I recommend: http://seancoman.com

Hope you guys find the tips useful!

Thanks a lot!
