friends, I am not clear about the differences between gato and gata. Anyone has any explanation? Thanks.

Gato is a male cat and gata is a female one.

How are we supposed to know gender of a specific cat all the time? It's not like I'm going up and checking! Is there some tradition that you would normally say one or the other if you don't know? I checked & Yahoo says gato if you don't know.
