Keyboard shortcuts

Is there a spot on this website that shows the keyboard shortcuts?

I have found that if you are on a question that contains checkboxes, you can press 1, 2, or 3 to check the appropriate box and press the enter key to "check" and "continue"

If anybody is wondering about other keyboard shortcuts: Enter = submit answer; 1, 2, 3 = select multiple choice answers; Arrow up, arrow down = navigate dropdown lists; Ctrl + Space = replay audio; Ctrl + Shift + Space = replay audio slower

That link no longer works, sadly

This is a link to a post where someone took a screen shot of that link that is no longer accessible. :

Is there a key binding for skipping the question? I find it's the only time I need to reach for the mouse

I fear not. Unfortunately.

Thanks! Helpful answer, pierce!

Thaaaaaannnnkkk youuuuu!

Considering your response was one of the first on Google; if you still can edit your comment it would be great if you included "CTRL+R", which makes you go directly to the next lesson. As mentioned further down in the comments.

Is there a shortcut key to display a new words definition instead of having to hover my mouse over the word ??

Is there a keyboard shortcut for the microphone to turn it into listening mode for speaking exercises? I always use the keyboard, but to activate the microphone I need to use the mouse. Chrome browser, Windows.

I found that just hitting Enter on the speaking questions activates listening mode on the microphone, at least on my Chromebook.

Do you know what the keyboard shortcut is for the special characters with the umlauts are? I also have to use the mouse for that as well?

In windows, install the U.S. International keyboard. You can switch between keyboards with WINDOWS+SPACE. Then, for example, to type è on the international keyboard, you'd type ~, e. It takes a bit of getting used to, since to type a ' you need to hit the ' and then the space bar etc, but once you get used to it, it's almost as nice as the Mac shortcut keys. Almost. ;)

Physical keyboards outside of the US often have an Alt Gr key. If you hold that down then type any of the vowels/ n/ ? or !, you'll get the corresponding Spanish Characters when using the U.S. International keyboard set up.

On a mac you use the alt/option key. Option+e creates this accent: ´ and then if you want a certain letter under that, you just type it next so ´becomes é or á. Option+u for ¨/ü/ö/ï etc. Just try option + something till you find the write letter to create the needed diacritical mark.

I recommend switching keyboard layouts. On a mac, there's even a keyboard viewer. http://dl-web.dropbox.com/u/29440342/screenshots/VRTHHJ-2012.12.15-14.44.png

just hold down the letter you want to accentuate, and a numbered list of accents will appear above the letter; then you just select the number that corresponds to the accent you want to use.

I'm not sure why this answer was down-voted. On a MacbookPro if one wants an "umlaut" for instance, I would hold down the "u" key for an extended period of time. After that, a horizontally numbered list appears in a dialogue box (in this example there are 5 choices). the "u" with the umlaut is the second choice. Then, I would enter the number "2" in order to indicate that I would like the "ü." The same applies for the esset "ß" the "ñ" or ń. For instance, for accent choices for the "u" i will type in each option in order" û, ü, ù, ú, ū. another popular letter with accents is the "o"--->ô, ö, ò, ó, œ, ø, ō, õ, etc.

So that only works for 10% of people. For the rest of us, you hold down a u and you get uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

Not on a computer keyboard. There is no long pressssssssssssssssssssssssss

Sometimes you need to hit Tab first, before the page will recognise an Enter key for "Check".

Is there a shortcut to switch between word bank and keyboard?

I second this question, that would be so useful. If not I'll just go ahead and build a chrome extension to do this for me...

The existing keyboard shortcuts are great. A few more would be awesome. I would especially like to see a few more keyboard shortcuts on the main page where I get dropped after completing a lesson. In particular, I would like to see "p" start another practice round and "n" start the next lesson. Just my two cents. Thanks.

I just discovered that Ctrl-R at the "Lesson Complete" page takes me directly to the next practice round! It would be great if these shortcuts were documented somewhere. Thanks.

Thanks for this. I can almost go through a lesson by just using thekeyboard. Only for the explanations of new words do I have to switch to the mouse to open the hover-overs. Is there any shortcut for that?

Is there any shortcut to skip a question? In the timed practice, it is almost impossible to read and translate any longer question and I would love to skip through without switching to mouse.

The shortcuts list is cleverly hidden from view on the help page, here's the direct link: https://support.duolingo.com/hc/en-us/articles/204642284-How-can-I-navigate-lessons-with-the-keyboard-

Is there a keyboard shortcut to toggle between English and Hebrew fonts in Duolingo Hebrew?

I'd like a button for that for other languages as well... The correct term would be to be able to toggle between Hebrew/Arabic/Cyrillic/Hangul/Chinese/Japanese and phonetic ! I will probably look in to making a simple javascript function for it..

I helped myself now and created an Chrome extension, so you can also use the space bar now to activate the microphone (mouse no longer required). https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/airport1-duolingo-improve/ldgljcgmfgjjjenhdoklnfciiaklochp

I rate Duolingo F Minus for keyboard navigation. Most of keyboard navigation shortcuts listed here and other places simply do no work in many places and some only work if you have already used the mouse to manually change the focus.

Is there no keyboard shortcut to start recording? I really think that would be useful in timed practices, as all the other exercise forms have keyboard shortcuts for submitting answers.

Is there a shortcut to return to the "home" page of Duolingo from a skill page? I could set one for my OS, but I was just wondering...

I hit some keys, not sure which, and got a screen during a lesson with the initial teaching lesson. I don't know how I got it, and I couldn't figure out how to get out of it. I ended up starting the lesson all over. Anyone know how to get the teaching points to come up and how to then get out of it?

I work on a lap top with a touchpad. Sometimes I accidentally brush the touchpad whilst typing and the mouse skips out of the active section. I've just found out that Shift + tab will get me back there without having to use the mouse.

any shortcuts to select words from word bank type questions?

Yes. Just start typing the letters of the word you want to choose. If there is more than one word with the same letters, keep typing! It's brilliant.

I haven't seen any, but it would be nice with a list. I would like to know what the shortcut is to replay the spoken parts, it's kinda annoying to have to use the mouse for that when I can do everything else with the keyboard.

The little green owl whispered that if you press ctrl + space the audio will repeat :))

the problem is that on my chromebook, that shortcut changes my keyboard between US and international settings...

yes this happens to me too.

same thing happens in Google Chrome for Mac. It works with Safari but I hate Safari :(

oh, I found the shortcut for Google Chrome for Mac. Ctrl + fn + Space -> Play the audio

That works in lessons, but unfortunately not in stories.

Yeah, just hit Ctrl + Space for regular speed audio, and hit Ctrl + Shift + Space for slowed audio.

http://duolingo.com/#/help You can find the Help link at the bottom of the page.

it doesn't say anything about keyboard shortcuts, so pretty useless.
