Is "captivating" an acceptable meaning of "fengende"? I thought so, but it was not accepted.

Captivating = fengslende. Catchy = fengende. If you are held captive by a performance it's quite a show! So, they are not synonymous.

Also, we do refer to performances which gain your exclusive and intensive focus as "captivating". It is not only literal. Magic, death-defying acts, things where you find you've been holding your breath without realizing it - this could be described as "captivating."
