Achievements/Badges

Duolingo should have achievements or badges that display a user's completion of something, dedication, or a user's skill level. Something like Khan Academy Badges would be cool! Post achievements below in the comments that you would like to see. My List of Achievements (User Submitted Achievements Are Italicized) :

  • Welcome-Join Duolingo
  • Newbie-Complete 1 lesson
  • Newbie Translator-Translate 1 sentence
  • You Know This Isn't Facebook, Right.... Post something in your stream
  • A Mild Case of Dedication-Earn 5 day streak
  • Just Beginning-Earn 10 coins
  • Skilled-Finish a skill tree
  • Perfectionist-Finish a skill tree with all skills golden
  • Merchant-Earn your first lingot
  • Freeze! Everybody Clap Your Hands!-Buy a streak freeze

And have levels for each one so

  • Rich! becomes Super Rich! for 5000 coins or something
  • Newbie Translator becomes Amateur Translator for 50 sentences

and so on

I really like this idea!

I can't tell if you are being sarcastic with the levels comment, since, our badges are called "levels" and they already correspond to coins. The same is true for translators in terms of tiers. My guess is yes ^_~

I mean they upgrade so once you get Amateur Translator it replaces Newbie Translator and so on. Maybe rank up would be a better description.

Maybe like: For registering you get a badge (like a welcome badge), for 5 streaks 1 badge, for 10 streaks, a different badge, and so on. For the first sentence translated in Immersion you get a Badge. For writing for the first time in your stream you get a badge (And in someone's else stream another badge) like a social badge. If you know KhanAcademy, then you can follow what I'm talking about. They give a badge for every little thing and it's really motivator and it's not messy at all. Besides, they order them by types. Like golden badges, silver badges and so on.

Yes, but they have a very different format. Here, the tree is straightforward, we all know which lessons each other has achieved. On KA there are many different videos one can watch to get those badges, so, their badge system works to allow that vast variation while still communicating some sort of comparable status. If we added badges here, it would be redundant.

As for streaks I feel like the numbers on our streak are pretty straightforward in announcing our achievements to folks. I know what my eyebrows do when I see someone with a 300 day streak. hehe.

I like that they added translator tiers because that area did not have a way to compare our progress, unlike most of the other features here.

If anything, I would suggest that they add a way to differentiate skill points and immersion points. I see people passing each other in skill points on the streams. But, I have no idea how close they are to me until that point of passing, and that is only if I've noticed it come across my screen.

I wouldn't attach "Expert" to someone who finishes a tree. It would leave a very misleading impression. That aside, we already have this in place with levels and tiers. If I see lvl 25, on someone's profile, I think of that as a very high status badge. ^_^

But someone who has completed the tree with a low level most likely has more knowledge about the language than someone who hasn't completed the tree but has a high level. There are some people who struggle with a language so they need a lot more practice than other people, so they get to a high level with out advancing very far in the tree. And then there are people like me, who have a little experience before joining and don't need much review, so they can get through the tree quite quickly but with a low language level.

Or even better: low level with completed tree might indicate that the person knew the language quite well before joining DuoLingo. If there were a Czech course for English speakers on Duolingo, I would do the tree just for fun (and testing), but I would see no point in testing my skill, since Czech is my native language.

Yup, exactly why I thought "Expert" would be misleading. Not everyone would have the same proficiency after finishing the tree. (Eventually the person who went slowly but finished will have finished it...) I have a relatively high level, but my tree is not completed because I could not rush and still get the proficiency I desire. Once I get to the end though, I will have a thorough grasp of what the tree had to offer.

+1 to what Usagiboy7 said - Khan Academy operates on a different format; our levels are our badges. Why do we need a badge to show off our streak that is already displayed?

https://www.duolingo.com/ubernichts

Because those things are not badges. You can lose a streak, you can't lose a badge. Also, badge doesn't have multiple levels, it is an achievement, not a status.

https://www.duolingo.com/pleiadian_

So I didn't achieve a Level 14 "status"? I need a badge that shows that I "am at" level 14?

I think you're missing the point. Not a badge for levels, for other things. And yes, @michelpm is right. The streaks are a great example. Many people are sad when they lost their streaks, and they want to somehow save it like "the biggest streak" she/he ever had, before losing it. So a badge for streaks would be cool. But a Badge for level 25 (The max level) would be kinda motivator too. Like a window coming with "You just hit level 25. Congratulations! You've achieved the highest level possible, but don't worry... there is still so much fun for you to discover." And then you get a golden Badge of "Max level achieved".

https://www.duolingo.com/pleiadian_

So redundancy will aid in motivation? Displaying the number "25" next to the language you are learning isn't enough to serve as a symbol of your accomplishments, but a colorful image that states you reached level 25 is?

It is, but a badge could have dates so you know when that happen and it's not actually bad to have like a fun register, like in WoW, they let you know you're in level 80 (I've never played Mist of Pandaria) and everybody knows it when they see you; but still, you can search in your accomplishes, it serves as pictures. Anyway, my point is that it wouldn't be bad, besides is so cute to have badges! Especially if it comes with differents faces of Duo in every one of them :D

StackExchange (http://stackexchange.com/) has three tiers of badges: bronze badges are for common use of the site (here it would be first lesson, first translated sentence, 5 days streak...), silver for extra dedication (50 sentences translated at tier 2+, 30 days streak, finished skill tree) and golden for almost heroic feats (1000 sentences translated at tier 4, 100 days streak, certificate with maximum score). Usually only the number of badges of each tier is displayed, and anyone can look to the user's profile for details. This way the difference between "Newbie" and "Perfectionist" is apparent without looking at the person's profile.

    • this should assure that there are not only many translations, but many good translations.

I don't. Honestly, I don't agree that we need these things. I think they would create a cluttered look like so many other websites I avoid. I am very easily visually overwhelmed and am less likely to spend time on a website where I encounter that feeling (though, more as someone entering a new website, than one with which I am already familiar. I believe I would stay on DL. But, the sensation is still unpleasant. I only visit Khan Academy a couple of times a year because I find it overwhelming.) I acknowledge that some other folks might feel differently though, hence my contributions to this thread. I do support exploring the idea of putting the Translator Tier level on profiles, because it is consistent with keeping track of our levels. But, in the same vain, I would rather not clutter the space by keeping track of how many sentences I've translated (outside of the stream, because that is more of a temporary update). These are just my personal feelings though. I hope I have not given any offense with them.

https://www.duolingo.com/b.gomez555

I understand your point and agree with some things that you have said. Perhaps achievements could have their own tab (at the top like vocabulary and immersion) and only be there. That way you would only see them should you want to. Maybe you could even turn them off. How does that sound?

That would be better than in the open, though, it would be one more tab to navigate in a sea of other links, like a path with a lot of left and right turns when someone is trying to find something more essential. I still think that streaks, levels, and coin markers already show our progress. I don't see myself changing my mind. But, that doesn't mean that DL won't decide to add badges ^_^
