I've been trying to figure out the difference between volver and regresar. From what I can tell, they both mean 'to come back' or 'to return', but I'm not sure when it would be more correct to use one over the other.

They both mean "To go back", "To come back" or "To return" and can be used interchangeably, although in my experience (having lived in Spain) volver is much more common.

Volver also features in a couple of useful and common idioms:

"Volverse + adjective" is "to become". For example "Me volvĂ loco" = "I became mad."

"Volver a + verb" is "to do again." For example "Volveré a leerlo" = "I will read it again."
