Show gender of nouns & plural when you hover over them

Dear Duolingo Staff,

I know this has been asked for a million times, but here is my plea anyway.. I know it's not that much to ask for from a programming perspective.. It would mean a great deal for us learners though...

When I learn a new word,(a noun), the gender of the word is just as important as the meaning. Now as I learn German I often have to guess the gender because when the word is presented it is often in Dative (dem) therefore I cannot know if it is either der oder das. Some words in Spanish & Italian are ambiguous (they finish with an E for example), so this would not only help for those who learn German.

When I go to the vocabulary overview and hover over the words I get the same results there. I must click on every word, to find out their gender.

Another thing that puzzles me, is that I cannot see the plural form anywhere. I know it is in duolingo's database as it obviously tests nouns in their plural as well.

So Duolingo staff, could you please look into this? I think it would be a huge jump forward! I believe the only way you truely know a noun is when you know the gender, the singular form, the plural form and naturally the meaning.

P.s.: Love the site!

As you said, it's been asked for a lot, but what's one more time, eh? This has been requested at least once or twice a week for as long as I've been using the site. There have been multiple recent discussions on this very forum in which Duo reps (including Luis himself) have stated that they're in the process of testing different implementations of this on the various platforms (search through Luis' stream to find a few of them if you want). Here's what it looks like on the web when viewing a sentence's discussion:

And here's what it looks like when viewed from within a lesson:

Gender hints are color-coded on the iOS app's test version (I don't know if they're testing on Android yet). Hopefully they'll be able to implement this for everyone very soon so that the weekly repeats of requests for this feature can finally stop.

Edit to add: With regard to plurals, I wouldn't expect to see them included in the hover hints as that would only clutter the hint divs. Of course you can always find the plural forms of virtually every noun (except for the handful for which the plural was never taught) by looking up the word on the vocabulary page and viewing the detail page for that particular noun.

The interesting thing with how it's implemented is that it's shown when hovering over the foreign word that it tells you the gender of that word while listing native words. It's not particularly helpful at that point, rather you want it when you are hovering over the native word to list the foreign words with their gender... i.e. hovering over "apple" would list "manzana (f)." In French (well Spanish too) there are often many words that change their form depending on the gender of a single word that you can't remember if it's le/la. At the time I'm constructing the language to be learned is when I need to peek at the gender -- not when I'm translating into my own language.

For some reason, the feminine and plural forms of words aren't showing on my vocabulary page. The first several lessons do, but not the ones I've done in the last couple weeks. The verbs aren't showing their conjugated forms either. Super weird.

Yes, I use an iPad and the genders are color-coded, but I don't see any plurals. {\rtf1\ansi\ansicpg1252 {\fonttbl} {\colortbl;\red255\green255\blue255;} }

I don't know whether they are testing on Android yet or not, but like you it's not in the version on my phone & tablet at the moment. If they're testing this on Android currently, it would only be available to a percentage of users so I would expect most people not to have it. As I understand it, it's still in testing on the other platforms, so not all iOS or web users have it at this stage. Hopefully it will be available for everyone soon enough.

This has been asked for and discussed much on this site. But it is a good suggestion and I also wish for it often. It would go a long way as an aid for locking gender of new nouns into memory. We'll just keep asking for it until we get it. I would suggest you post this suggestion in the support section as a more direct route to the people who can do something with it.

I've posted this request so many times I can't even begin to tell you. I don't understand Duo's resistance to this request when such an overwhelming majority of users want this. I still think gender flash cards would also be very helpful, but as your suggestion goes, hovering over the word should be the bare minimum. Good luck !

Totally agree. When learning German one is ALWAYS told to learn the gender with the noun. So far the only negative I can see from this site is that the gender is not consistently provided with the noun (especially when you hover it). It would be far more professional and helpful for everyone if it was provided!! But apart from that (at least so far) I have to agree that I love the site too!

We really need this

Would love this feature. Would especially help with nouns that are somewhat irregular (el tema, la mano) as well as femine nouns that take a male singular adjective (el agua, el √°guila)

I definitely agree 100%. We must learn nouns with articles and they should be listed that way at all times. Also would be helpful to put the plural abbreviations after the word, just as done in FL textbooks. I am hooked on this site! This is great for learners and reviewers ( like me!) I love it. However, I did run across some problems and I hope someone is taking the time to look into those commented on and make some changes.

Maybe they're not adding this because they want us to learn from mistakes :P
