Duolingo Team Stories: Meet Kai!
We'd like to introduce the newest member of the Duolingo Team. Kai is an experienced product manager who will be helping us on various projects, including localization and Incubator improvements. Hope you're as excited as we are to welcome him aboard!
Where are you from?
I am from Singapore.
What languages do you speak?
English and Chinese. I also know some Japanese and pretend to speak some Arabic (I studied it in college, but forgot most of it)
Why do you love language learning?
It’s fun. I love that learning new words opens up new glimpses into different cultures. I feel like trying and valiantly failing to communicate in the language of the country I’m visiting also somehow endears me more to the locals when I’m traveling.
What do you have on your desk? What are your tools?
A big monitor and a laptop. These are the tools of my trade. Otherwise I try to keep my desk as empty as possible.
Do you have a language learning tip you'd like to share with the community?
Don’t be afraid to start speaking in a new language even though you’re not that great at it -- even if you literally just started learning it yesterday.
What's your favorite part about working for Duolingo?
Being surrounded by some of the most passionate people I’ve ever met.
What do you like to do in your free time?
Hiking, camping and traveling. I like exploring both the great outdoors and interesting cities.
What are some common language errors you still make?
I really like using Chinese idioms, but I’m not that good at them so I tend to embarrass myself from time to time by using idioms inappropriately.
What is your favorite show in any other languages you speak?
1リットルの涙 (it’s a pretty old Japanese TV series) because it’s very touching and reminds me to live each day to the fullest. Also I never get sick of FRIENDS re-runs.
What do you want to say to the community?
You guys are probably the most awesome part of duolingo, and I can’t wait to get to know you and soak up all your enthusiasm!
Did you miss previous team stories? Catch up below :)
Nice to meet you!
(Already) thank you for making our course building/maintenance work in the incubator easier! :)
The languages you know are also really cool!
I'm truly envious. ^^
spreading cultural smiles
access to all of us
I watched 1 litre of tears years ago and it was very touching. It was also one of my favourite show after I Gave My First Love To You, Koizora and Atashinchi no Danshi.
When you say you speak Chinese do you mean Mandarin? I ask because there are a number of Chinese dialects (or languages) spoken in Singapore, although Mandarin has become much more prevalent of late.
Would you care to comment on the language situation in Singapore? From the outside it looks quite interesting and also rapidly changing...
Yes, I mean Mandarin. Although I can also speak another dialect in Singapore which is probably 95% similar to Taiwanese. There's still a hodgepodge of languages being spoken in Singapore, but the most common is English (we call our variant/accent Singlish).

I presume you mean Hokkien.
(Linking to the article because we're a community of language nerds.)

Welcome! I think I've only been here for about a month and a half. So is English spoken in Singapore?
