(Is this anywhere near the mark? Or am I just pouring out foreign words in an arbitrary order?)

Even though it's a grammatical disaster, I understood everything you said!

Why don't you join our Facebook page and our chatroom?

P.S. Your Dutch is now officially better than my Swedish...I need to start studying harder! :P

No it's a separate chat, but you can find instructions on how to get there in our Dutch Duolingo page.

"grammatical disaster"

I seem to remember a teacher in the dim dark distant past describing me that way. I had another version but then I started reversing words around and ended up with this. As my art teacher used to say "stop fiddling with it, or you'll only make it worse" (my artwork that is).

As for Facebook I actually don't have one. This is the only reason I can think of for having one.

PS The Dutch course must have better moderators than the Swedish one.

As a soon-to-be translator, I know the problem. I have to sit down, translate a text, and then stay the hell away from it. As soon as I start to make adjustments, it usually ends up much worse. In our first year, we were all taught to translate-put away-reread-make adjustments-put away-reread ad nauseam. I tried this method and I only made things worse, so now I just pretend something took me a week, while I only spent about an two hours on it.

The Dutch Duolingo Facebook page is quite a busy beehive. People exchange links, funny pictures, anything to do with the Dutch. Great place to practice your Dutch or to find like minded people!

P.S. Oh no they're great. I've just been lazy.

Your vocabulary is very well developed! Overall, the text is very easy to understand! The main problem in the text that you wrote is in the sentence order and in your use of tenses. I'll try to explain properly below :P

"Ik zou graag wat schrijven te proberen." Good use of "zou", only remark is that the order should be "Ik zou graag proberen (om) wat te schrijven", as in "I would like (Ik zou graag) to try (proberen) to write someting (om wat te schrijven)"

"Zes maanden geleden, ik weet bijna geen Nederlands." Since you are speaking of six months ago, the verb "weten" must be used in the past simple. So: "Zes maanden geleden, wist ik bijna geen Nederlands." The use of "sprak" (from spreken) or "kon" (from kunnen) is more common, but anyone would understand you if you use "wist"

Ik hoop iemand me begrijpen kunnen. The correct sentence should be "Ik hoop dat iemand me kan begrijpen". This is very similar to the English: "I hope that (ik hoop dat) someone (iemand) can understand (kan begrijpen) me (mij). Just put the mij in front of kan begrijpen and you're grammatically correct. Again though, you would be understood, but recognised as a foreign speaker when using the order of sentence you used above.

Bij me is het mooi weer, de zon is schijnend, de bloemen zijn kleurrijk en de vogels zijn zangen zingen. Het is de lente, zo lekker ;-) Very nice sentence! More common is the use of "mij" in "bij mij", because it puts a little more emphasis on the "bij mij" part. Also, we would say "de zon schijnt" in present simple. In "De vogels zijn zangen zingen" I assume you mean "the birds are singing their songs". Then it would be "en de vogels zingen hun liedjes". Use "hun" (their) because "de vogels" is plural and "liedjes" is more modern than "zangen". One final very small remark on this sentence: "Het is lente" sounds a bit more Dutch than using "de" inbetween.

Gauw, zal ik met mij boot langs de rivier en kamperen gaan. Dan ik zal ertussen de bomen, bloemen en zingen vogels liggen. Use "mijn" (my/mine) instead of "mij" (me) before "boot". Use of "over" is more suitable than "langs" when speaking of sailing a boat over a river. Because there are two separate uses for "gaan" which are different ("over de rivieren gaan" and "gaan kamperen") you have to use "gaan" twice, so: "Gauw, zal ik met mijn boot over de rivieren gaan, en gaan kamperen." I know this might sound weird but it is a bit clearer. Second part of the sentence only has two minor little errors: "ertussen" should be "tussen" and "zingen" (to sing) should be "zingende" (singing).

Ik hoop alles goed met jullie. You need a "dat" between "hoop" and "alles", and a supportive verb to clarify. so: "Ik hoop dat alles goed gaat/is met jullie". Use of "gaat" or "is" does not matter, pick your favorite :).

I know this might sound like a lot of critique, but I wanted to show you minor mistakes in language as well, so you can learn from everything you wrote. There are a lot of good sentences and there is good use of vocabulary in this text! You already make it sound like a poem :)

Hope it's of use for you

Thomas

Thank you so much. This is extremely useful. To have something I have written pulled apart and corrected helps a lot.

It is also very practical since kerstmis is approaching and people like me need to send some cards. Not all my tantes can speak English.

Hopefully other people will share some writing attempts and we can all learn.

Once again thanks.

Hahaha! Wij hebben hier vreselijk weer, regen, wind en geen vogel te zien. Ook zie ik geen bloemen meer. En dat met het weer zou ook nog 2 dagen zo blijven. En dan moet ik nog op mandaag weer met het werk beginnen. Maar ik probeer vrolijk te blijven.

Great to see your desire to express in Nederlands! ^_^ I wish I wasn't on a mobile device (nor working) -- I'll have to extend my response soon. But yes, you are certainly 'near the mark'! ;)

There are some elements that could be polished in your text. But all in all it's understandable :)

I'm certain others will beat me to naming most elements that could be improved, but once I'm back at my desk I'll expand this post and point out some things -- if they're not already pointed out by the time I can do so :)

I'm not a native speaker and I understood everything you said. Maybe that counts for something? Haha. :) But I'm with you, sometimes I feel like I'm just randomly slapping words together in random order and wonder if it makes sense to anyone at all. We'll get it eventually! Keep practicing! :)
