For some time I have been noticing that there appear to have been new Spanish words appearing in my daily practice of the Spanish (from English) course. While not being sure when they had increased, I was sure there were words I had not encountered before. Then the other day I visited 'Words' and saw my word count was 2917! As I don't go to 'Words' regularly this was quite a pleasant shock ... I remember a time with there was only about 1800 words - when did this big increase in words happen? Or have new words been gradually introduced?

Either way, this a an amazing increase, and somehow I have absorbed more than another 1000 or so extra words. Many thanks to the language designers! I know that this would have been a big job.

Here's my appreciation for the increase in vocabulary! Thanks!

Doesn`t mean much when it includes plurals and conjugations. For example, two of my words are "otra" and "otras". We need more new words not different forms of the same words.

Yeah. It appears a little strange to me. I had not realised that there was a change to the way Duolingo measures the number of words learnt. So when I look at the words count, does it mean anything? (Fortunately for me it does not really matter - it was never about the word count anyway!)

I agree that it would be helpful if new words would be added to increase our vocabulary rather than adjust the way words are counted.

No, it probably doesn't mean much. They do need to increase the number of actual words and word families that are taught. Everything else is creative accounting.

There was an update to the Words page some time back to make it more accurate. But, post the change, the count reduced from 1586 to 502 (Spanish for English Speakers). After getting feedback from users, the Duolingo team must have done some more tweaking and it went up to 2900+.

Interesting reading - I missed all this as I mainly practice my ongoing Spanish, but don't really check the number of words given in 'Words'. From having read the post you have given, I am now a little confused - has there been any change in the number of words being taught?
