Lots of deleted comments

I've noticed recently that the discussions of various words and phrases suddenly have a large number of deleted comments; in some entire conversations seem to have been deleted. Is there a reason for this?

Irrelevant and out-of-date comments may be deleted by moderators, and often are (e.g. complaints about bugs which have now been fixed). Also, users can delete their own comments. I don't know of any reason for constructive comments to be deleted by DL staff or mods.

Hi Whiterun! Like Pont mentioned we do have guidelines for the forums. Can you share an example of a conversation that was deleted or more specifics, so that we can take a closer look? Thanks so much!

I noticed this one the other day. http://www.duolingo.com/#/comment/85328

I'm wondering why those comments aren't just completely eliminated instead of being left there saying [deleted]

If the post being deleted has replies, the system automatically overwrites it with that; I tend to remove posts from the bottom for this reason :) Looking at them, I guess they were mostly removed for clean-up purposes, but I restored some to make the surviving discussions more understandable. And then hid all evidence :P

That's much better. Thank you! Those deleted comments that you restored are very helpful for understanding the discussion, yes, and it doesn't look like a graveyard anymore. :-)

The [deleted] is what I mean. The next time I see it I will post an example.

Here are the community guidelines: http://www.duolingo.com/guidelines Sometimes mod or staff delete comments that violate these guielines.

In addition, folks can delete their own comments if they realize someone else had already made the same point, or find that they were mistaken, etc.

I don't mind bringing this thread back up, it's a good point to report it; again, thanks for pointing that out, I fixed it for the time being. Lately I'm only able to fix the deletes of other mods and not those made by the authors themselves, but it wasn't the case there.
