I don't think that 'the food' makes much sense here in english. 'The pasta is food' sounds more natural to me.

It does not sound natural in Norwegian either. Though, it's important to consider that these sentences serve only as examples. Simplicity may compromise the coherence of the sentence, but it helps people understand how these gramatical rules work.

"The pasta is food." might be a more "natural" sentence, but it would not be a good translation of "Pastaen er maten." If the original had been "Pastaen er mat", you would have been right.

It would make sense as part of a longer sentence "the pasta is the food I had" in response to "of these foods which did you have?". Still awkward but it can be grammatically fine.
