Why is met required in this sentence? Can't you just say "De honden stoppen eten"?

No, 'met' is required. It's just the way we say it. If you stop doing something, you would say 'stoppen met'. :)

Thank-you, is that just in regards to stopping eating?

No, it's in regards to "starting" and "stopping".

  • Wij beginnen met eten/zingen/zwemmen/voetballen.
  • Wij stoppen met eten/zingen/zwemmen/voetballen.

Think of it like "to commence with".
