Is this covered on Duolingo?

I'm only on level 9, but I see that "Feelings" is coming up and was curious - are sexual orientations covered on Duolingo? Like, how to say "I am a lesbian," or "he is gay" or "she is homosexual," or maybe even "bisexual?"

Not unless it's been added recently. This course is generally very commendably inclusive of all gender orientations and sexualities, though, e.g. by not assuming that a pojkvän ("boyfriend") automatically means the subject is a girl.

I'll translate the ones you listed, if you wonder about any others please feel free to ask.

  • I am a lesbian = Jag är lesbisk
  • He is gay = Han är bög

Like in English, you could also say gay for both genders. Note that lesbisk is an adjective in Swedish, whereas bög is a noun.

  • She is homosexual = Hon är homosexuell
  • He is bisexual = Han är bisexuell

And you should also note that there is a pronoun hen which simply serves as a gender neutral alternative, for when you don't know somebody's gender or it is completely irrelevant. It's been gaining acceptance rapidly in the past 5-6 years, although many also do not support it. I am personally all for it.

Of course, there are many, many words for denoting sexuality, just like in English. Some are free of connotation, some are very pejorative, and most depend on the context in which they are said, as well as by whom.

And I suspect the sudden influx of childish downvotes - about a dozen or so in the past hour - is the reason for the absense of a such lesson. Presumably Duolingo wishes to keep out of political debate and stay shy of terminology that might evoke controversial commentary.

thank you so much! and yes, I have a few friends in Sweden who've told me about how they go about gender neutral pronouns, and I'm glad that it's even an option!

You're very welcome. :)

Do you mind also giving us the Swedish for : heterosexual, pansexual and asexual?

Simply replace "sexual" with "sexuell" and you're there - heterosexuell, pansexuell asexuell :)

Seems simple enough. Tack så mycket.
