The thought just occurred to me: is it possible to make double negatives in Swedish?

For example, if someone said 'Do you not read the newspaper?', and you reply 'I don't not read the paper, but...'

I presume you can't say 'Jag läser inte inte tidningen'? Would it have to be something like 'Det är inte för att jag läsa inte tidningen'? (Or should that be 'läsa jag inte'? This rule still confuses me.)

Or am I attempting to superimpose English modes of speech that just don't apply? Any clarification wouldn't be unappreciated.

I'd say Det är inte det att jag inte läser tidningen or Det är inte så att jag inte läser tidningen.

You can also say Det är inte som att jag inte läser tidningen, that's like It's not like I don't read the paper.

On the other hand, the kind of colloquial double negatives your English teacher told you not to use, like I ain't got no, have no real counterpart in Swedish. I don't think anybody says anything like that.

Thank you Arnauti. May I ask why is it 'jag inte läser ' and not 'jag läser inte' or 'läser jag inte'?

Yes, I only meant the logical double-negatives that end up as a positive, but emphasize a lack of non-something.

In a subclause, inte goes before the verb.
