The joys of grandparenting!
Had our lovely granddaughter to stay for half term, but was so busy that I lost my 700+ streak (sigh!) - did not realise my streak freeze had been used the day before; lesson learnt!
Good for you! Spending time with your granddaughter not losing your streak. Just here to say that my first granddaughter is 2 weeks old today... Not really adding to the conversation.. just proud as hell :-)
Io sono una nonna quest'anno. In settembre, mia figlia ricevuto sua prima figlia, Grazia.
Spending time with your granddaughter is more important than keeping a streak. Although I don't have grandkids, I do have a three year old niece (she just turned three in August) who I love to pieces. I know that they will only be this young once, and they grow so quickly. It seems like just yesterday I was holding her for the first time. It's more important for you to be there for the big moments of her life: first steps, first words, graduations, marriages, great-grandkids, etc. than to keep a streak. Spoil her to pieces whenever you can!
I agree with you KristenDQ. Thank you for encouraging us to keep an appropriate focus on the things that really matter. I think lindaljc has exactly this outlook on life as well :D
You're welcome! These types of moments only happen once and if you lose them, they're gone forever. I am fortunate enough to see my niece every week or every other week. Those moments when she comes running to me, screaming "AUNTIE!!!!!!" are my favorites. I was right there, however, with a video camera for her first words and steps. I make a Powerpoint for her every year for Christmas so she can see how much she's grown that year. I put things in there like her first steps, that you can never get back. I even have pictures of her sonograms in the first Powerpoint I made for her. Yesterday, I recorded her singing her favorite song and dancing to it, which I will put in this year's Powerpoint. I know I'm the crazy Auntie with the camera, and she might kill me later, but I don't care: when she's old enough, I know she'll appreciate all I do for her. I know that if I miss a day of practice, it'll all be worth it, and Duolingo will be there when I come back the next day.
I nearly lost my streak the day I went to visit my new granddaughter too, but I was lucky........I had a lovely time with her and held on to it! If I had lost it it would have been for a good reason though, and worth it :)
That's amazing that you got to 700 plus with a busy life and grandkids. I'm having a hard time keeping a streak only a fragment of that and I will abandon it completely when things get really busy at the end of this year. My grandkids really keep me hopping but I love them!
I know ever so many of us feel for you at this loss. Especially at one so large as over a 700 day streak !
We are all impressed by the fortitude of your " sigh ". Thank you for being so inspiring.
And seeing the 'humorous' side - of it being one of the joys of grand-parenting ;P
Putting it sort of in perspective - for these 'streaks - they are just a part of a game - a bauble - to help keep us engaged and checking in. Their real wealth is in the engagement they give us, to check in where possible every day.
And hopefully in that - to improve our own language learning journey.
And that you also see the benefit - that you have had others drop by to say hi to you, and be impressed by your achievements, and by your attitude.
I look forward to see you around on Duolingo. (and have also added some lingots as a small token).
Thank you for your lovely reply lindakanga, you really cheered me up! You are completely right, that it is just a number, and I still have all the learning I got from doing it. I'll keep going and hope you do too !
Since we are talking about grandchildren, does anyone else think it strange that there is one word, “nipote”, For nephew, niece, grandson, granddaughter?
