"What kind of salad is this?"
Translation:Який це за салат?
Well, this is totally different. Why not "Який салат це є" instead of "З чим цей салат"? Or could it be better if the English said, "What is in this salad?" or "With what was this salad made?" I have no idea, but I just found this translation impossible to figure out without context.
That was my first guess, but It wasn't accepted as a valid answer. Is this a proper sentence?
If you were to ask "що це за салат?" someone may answer: салат Цезар (Caesar salad). After that you can ask "З чим цей салат?" and one will answer "з салатом і яйцем" (with lettuce and egg)
Салат is both salad and lettuce
Yes, "що це за салат?" sounds naturally and conveys the English sentence well.
"What kind of salad is this?" What does that translate? Is there a mix up here?
I learned "Чим сьгодні вареники?" (What kind of varenyky do you have today?) from the book "Beginner's Ukrainian." Used it, so I know Ukrainian people understand it.
