Omitting the second article should not be marked wrong. "A big plane and small car," is perfectly O.K. in English.
I don't intend to be rude, but the word "літак" sounds hilarious to me :)
It's just amusing to a Polish speaker, hard to explain exactly why. On the other hand I know that our "samolot" sounds funny to some Slavic nations. That's the charm of our languages :)
In Russian it's samoľot too, "self-flier" :-)
But Polish samochód, literally "automobile," sounds horrible to my ear. But in Russian we have parochod which is a "steam-goer" or steam ship.
