Should add airplane as an acceptable response.

Omitting the second article should not be marked wrong. "A big plane and small car," is perfectly O.K. in English.

I don't intend to be rude, but the word "літак" sounds hilarious to me :)

It's just amusing to a Polish speaker, hard to explain exactly why. On the other hand I know that our "samolot" sounds funny to some Slavic nations. That's the charm of our languages :)

In Russian it's samoľot too, "self-flier" :-)

But Polish samochód, literally "automobile," sounds horrible to my ear. But in Russian we have parochod which is a "steam-goer" or steam ship.

Which Ukrainian word is more commonly used for airplane?

Літак, definitely :)
